Slave Theater in the Roman Republic receives Award of Merit

The Society for Classical Studies has announced Amy Richlin as the winner of a 2018 Charles J. Goodwin Award of Merit for her book, Slave Theater in the Roman Republic: Plautus and Popular Comedy.

The Charles J. Goodwin Awards of Merit, three prizes given annually, are named in honor of a long-time member and generous benefactor. They are the only honors for scholarly achievement given by the Society.

Amy Richlin is Professor of Classics at the University of California, Los Angeles.

“The book offers a paradigm of traditional philological scholarship at its very best, enriched by a broad view, a keen eye for the telling detail, and a passionate commitment to hearing and letting us hear the voices of the downtrodden,” the citation notes of Richlin’s work.

Titles from Cambridge University Press were also recognized by the Society for the Charles J. Goodwin Awards of Merit in 2017. Both Politics of Public Space in Republican Rome by Amy Russell and The Sublime in Antiquity by James I. Porter were previously awarded.
