Summary
One of the most dramatic changes in the life of women in the twentieth century was the advent of safe childbirth. In 1928 pregnancy caused the deaths of 2,920 women in England and Wales. In 2018 the UK figure was 72. Reducing the nation’s maternal mortality rate from 1 in 400 to 1 in 10,000 births was a remarkable achievement. This book explains how it was done.
