    Summary

This document provides guidance for persons who are pregnant and breastfeeding during the COVID-19 pandemic. The California Department of Public Health will update this guidance as new information becomes available.

Pregnancy: Based on what we know at this time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that “pregnant persons are at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19 and death compared to non-pregnant persons. In addition, pregnant persons with COVID-19 may be at increased risk for other adverse outcomes, such as preterm labor (giving birth before 37 weeks). It is especially important for pregnant women, and those living with them, to protect themselves from contracting COVID-19.”

Breastfeeding: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Academy of Pediatrics state that parents with COVID-19 can breastfeed. When breastfeeding, precautions should be taken to reduce the risk of transmitting COVID-19 to your baby.
