Summary

This golden book of the King of England, in which he responds no less piously than learnedly to various little snares of Luther, and of that letter of his, dripping with honeyed poison, when within these last few days I received it from the most learned prelate, Lord Andrzej Krzycki, Bishop of Przemysl, to whom such things as most properly concern a vigilant pastor are of particular concern, desiring, on account of my devotion to this region, to share with this most happy land of Poland such an outstanding work of my prince and, as they say, natural Lord, I passed it on at once to the printer Hieronymus Vietori for publication. For I was absolutely convinced that by this work I would come into no little favour with the nobles of this glorious nation, who all, I had already most clearly understood by no empty or dubious indications, along with that most noble hero, godlike Sigismund, eagerly embrace that same King of England with a wonderful kind of love. Now, there seemed to me no one among such a throng of magnates to whom, rather than to you Illustrious Baron, this little work, so useful to all the orthodox, might be dedicated, as here coming to new birth through my diligence and Vietor’s. For to whom might it better be dedicated than to him, who has ever shown himself to the highest degree a most faithful Achates to the most serene King Sigismund, another defender of our faith in this part of the world, as much in all other affairs as in this truly most godly endeavour to stamp out all heresy? Add to this, that I have recently been made unequivocally aware that this king of mine regards you with the utmost charity and that you in turn are singularly bound to him. Therefore, most illustrious champion, deign to take under your protection this little book, which I have dedicated to your Highness, and by that authority which, next after the king, you supremely and deservedly wield, defend it strenuously from the frenzied baying of the envious and against the ungodly enemies of Christ and his Church. Farewell illustrious champion. From Cracow, at the Hostel of Jerusalem, 12th February in the 1527th year from the birth of Our Lord.
