We report on the design and characterization of the plasma mirror system installed on the J-KAREN-P laser at the Kansai Photon Science Institute, National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology. The reflectivity of the single plasma mirror system exceeded 80%. In addition, the temporal contrast was improved by two orders of magnitude at 1 ps before the main pulse. Furthermore, the laser near-field spatial distribution after the plasma mirror was kept constant at plasma mirror fluence of less than 100 kJ/cm2. We also present the results of investigating the difference and the fluctuation in energy, pulse width and pointing stability with and without the plasma mirror system.

Introduction
The Certificate Program in Translational Research (CPTR) at the Georgia Clinical and Translational Science Alliance provides Ph.D. students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty with didactic, mentored, and experiential training in clinical and translational research.
MethodsQuantitative evaluation includes tracking trainee competency, publications, grants and careers in clinical and translational research. Qualitative evaluation includes interviews with trainees about program experiences.
ResultsThe CPTR provided knowledge and skills in clinical and translational research through coursework, clinical rotations, and collaboration with interdisciplinary scientists. Trainees reported increased confidence in 22 program competencies. Trainees have published more than 290 peer-reviewed articles and received over $4 million in grants from the NIH, over $15 million from the U.S. Department of Defense, and more than $300,000 from foundations. Trainees who completed the program remained in clinical and translational research.
ConclusionsPrograms like the CPTR are needed to train investigators to advance biomedical discoveries into population health.

Cephalopods (Mollusca: Cephalopoda) play an important role as keystone invertebrates in various marine ecosystems, as well as being a valuable fisheries resource. At the World Malacological Congress, held 21–28 July 2013 in Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal, a number of cephalopod experts convened to honour the contribution of the late Malcolm R. Clarke, FRS (1930–2013) to cephalopod research. Endorsed by the Cephalopod International Advisory Council (CIAC), the meeting discussed some of the major challenges that cephalopod research will face in the future. These challenges were identified as follows: (1) to find new ways to ascertain the trophic role and food web links of cephalopods using hard tissues, stable isotopes and novel concepts in theoretical ecology; (2) to explore new approaches to the study of cephalopod morphology; (3) to further develop cephalopod aquaculture research; (4) to find new ways to ascertain cephalopod adaptation and response to environmental change; (5) to strengthen cephalopod genetics research; and (6) to develop new approaches for cephalopod fisheries and conservation. The present paper presents brief reviews on these topics, followed by a discussion of the general challenges that cephalopod research is bound to face in the near future. By contributing to initiatives both within CIAC and independent of CIAC, the principle aim of the paper is to stimulate future cephalopod research.
Identification of field-caught Culicoides biting midges using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry

Culicoides biting midges are of great importance as vectors of pathogens and elicitors of allergy. As an alternative for the identification of these tiny insects, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was evaluated. Protein mass fingerprints were determined for 4–5 field-caught reference (genetically confirmed) individuals of 12 Culicoides species from Switzerland, C. imicola from France, laboratory-reared C. nubeculosus and a non-biting midge. Reproducibility and accuracy of the database was tested in a validation study by analysing 108 mostly field-caught target Culicoides midges and 3 specimens from a non-target species. A reference database of biomarker mass sets containing between 24 and 38 masses for the different species could be established. Automated database-based identification was achieved for 101 of the 108 specimens. The remaining 7 midges required manual full comparison with the reference spectra yielding correct identification for 6 specimens and an ambiguous result for the seventh individual. Specimens of the non-target species did not yield identification. Protein profiling by MALDI-TOF, which is compatible with morphological and genetic identification of specimens, can be used as an alternative, quick and inexpensive tool to accurately identify Culicoides biting midges collected in the field.
Presence of a seawater-filled caecum in Echinocardium cordatum (Echinoidea: Spatangoida)

Heart urchins (Echinoidea: Spatangoida) are considered infaunal, deposit feeding sea urchins that utilize the surrounding sediment as a source of nutrients. Sediment occupies most of the digestive tract lumen but never enters the gastric caecum, a prominent structure that is filled with a transparent fluid. The aim of this study was to shed light on the nature of the fluid found inside the gastric caecum of a well-studied spatangoid species, Echinocardium cordatum. Our conclusions are based on a three-step-approach: firstly, by following the movement of dyed seawater from the mouth up to the caecal lumen; secondly, by comparing the osmolarity of various body fluids; and thirdly, by describing the particulate content of the gastric caecum. In addition, we employed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to reveal the absence of sediment within the gastric caecum. Our osmolarity measurements show that the coelomic fluid is significantly more concentrated than the caecal fluid, which in turn has an osmolarity similar to seawater. MRI reveals that the gastric caecum, in contrast to the rest of the digestive tract, is always devoid of sediment. Light and electron microscopy observations reveal the presence of a variety of detrital particles suspended in the caecal fluid that are identical to those occurring in seawater sampled over the seafloor. We argue that the fluid filling the gastric caecum must be predominantly seawater, and we propose a scenario that explains seawater circulation in E. cordatum. In this context, the gastric caecum could act as an internal trap for suspended particulate organic matter. We hypothesize that spatangoid sea urchins could have adopted internal suspension feeding as a secondary feeding mode in addition to deposit feeding.

Ultrafast science—the study of highly complex and extremely short-lived transient events—has become an area of significant interest in the materials sciences, physics, chemistry, and biology. This article focuses on the state-of-the-art instrumentation and a few of the available probes and techniques, and intends to give a brief overview of the possibilities and challenges for ultrafast materials sciences and for the instrumentation that is required. The pulsed laser-material interactions are briefly introduced, since they are the principal methods to access and trigger ultrafast processes in materials. The associated time and length scales and a few experimental possibilities in the materials sciences are discussed in the first part of this article. The second part deals with the two most applicable types of pulsed probes, x-rays and electrons, and the associated methods to interrogate ultrafast processes. Emphasis is on their differences, capabilities, and limitations.

A detailed view of the Fundamental Plane of early–type galaxies in clusters at z$\sim$0.2

We present a spectroscopic sample of 48 early-type galaxies in the rich cluster Abell 2218 and 50 galaxies in Abell 2390. Since both samples are very similar, we combine them and investigate a total number of 98 early-type galaxies at $z \sim 0.2$. A subsample of 34 galaxies with HST structural properties is used to construct the Fundamental Plane. Elliptical and S0 galaxies show a zeropoint offset of $\overline{m}_{r}\sim0.43$ mag with respect to the local Coma FP. Both sub-samples, ellipticals and lenticulars, exhibit a similar, mild evolution and small scatter. The moderate amount of luminosity evolution is consistent with stellar population models of passive evolution, if $z_{f}\ge2$ is assumed.

We introduce our project that investigates the kinematic properties of early–type galaxies in 6 distant poor clusters at $z\approx0.25$. This study represents a continuation of our efforts to understand galaxy evolution in low-density environments. Higher–resolution MOSCA spectra have been obtained at the Calar Alto 3.5-m telescope with which we can measure absorption line strengths and velocity dispersions. In conjunction with our HST/F702W images of all the clusters, we are able to construct the Fundamental Plane of ellipticals and S0 galaxies in poor clusters at a look-back time of $\approx3$ Gyr. For galaxies outside the HST field, we concentrate our analysis on the Mg–$\sigma$ and Faber–Jackson relations. With the line strength diagrams age/metallicity distributions can be derived in densities between the field and rich cluster environments. Comparing with our rich clusters at the same cosmic epochs, the dependence of galaxy formation models on the local environment can be tested more quantitatively.
