This paper presents a hybrid antenna design for an optically powered super high frequency (SHF) radio frequency identification transponder applicable for the integration into metal. The key feature of the antenna is its ability to receive microwave signals at SHF for data communication and optical signals for the power supply of the transponder. The antenna design is based on a circular waveguide which is filled with a bundle of polymer optical fibers to guide light to the photodiodes. In addition, a transition is placed within the circular waveguide to transfer the waveguide mode of the SHF signal into a microstrip mode which is a more suitable structure for the integration of electronic transponder components. This paper discusses the constraints and solutions for the aforementioned combination of SHF microwave and light. The figures of merit of the optical power supply are presented, including considerations of the light distribution and the obtained power as a function of the incident angle and the used polymer optical fiber diameter. Furthermore, the measured gain and return loss of the SHF antenna structure is compared to the simulated results.

Objective
To specify the principles, definition and dimensions of the new nutrition science.
PurposeTo identify nutrition, with its application in food and nutrition policy, as a science with great width and breadth of vision and scope, in order that it can fully contribute to the preservation, maintenance, development and sustenance of life on Earth.
MethodA brief overview shows that current conventional nutrition is defined as a biological science, although its governing and guiding principles are implicit only, and no generally agreed definition is evident. Following are agreements on the principles, definition and dimensions of the new nutrition science, made by the authors as participants at a workshop on this theme held on 5–8 April 2005 at the Schloss Rauischholzhausen, Justus-Liebig University, Giessen, Germany.
ResultNutrition science as here specified will retain its current [classical] identity as a biological science, within a broader and integrated conceptual framework, and will also be confirmed as a social and environmental science. As such it will be concerned with personal and population health, and with planetary health – the welfare and future of the whole physical and living world of which humans are a part.

It has been observed in experiments that charging of nanometer-sized porous material can lead to expansion or contraction of this material. This effect can be explained by a change in surface stress as a function of surface electron charge density. Here, we employ ab initio density functional calculations using a mixed-basis pseudopotential approach to study the change in surface stresses, f, as a function of surface charge density, q for Au thin films with (111) and (100) surfaces. The derivative of the surface stress with respect to the charge, ôf/ôq, at equilibrium is related to and can be evaluated from ôμ/ôe of an uncharged slab, where μ is the chemical potential of the slab and e the tangential strain. The responses of the (111) and (100) surfaces to charging are evaluated in this way as −1.86 V and −0.90 V, respectively. The calculated values compare well to experimental observations (−0.9 V).
