Summary
Scholars in Asia have argued that to teach Asian American literature in Asia, one must take liberties to queer and subvert this very literature - to see it within transpacific narratives of colonization and empire, to look at it as a historical inventory of the ways in which this literature erases, dismisses, or seeks to “other” Asia. In this chapter, I reflect upon my experiences teaching, queering, and subverting Asian American literature during more than five years at three universities in Nanjing, China, and in Hong Kong. As a mixed Filipino/white man who was most often seen as “Eurasian,” I witnessed students racialize me either as living proof of American multicultural exceptionalism or as its very opposite: the exilic Chinese who had come to claim my true home. Teaching Asian American literature, I found, brought these presumptions to the fore and allowed me to undo many of the presumptions placed upon me as a self-exile descended from American colonial subjects. My experiences lead me to suggest that rather than just queering or critiquing Asian American literature, educators teach Asian American literature as an ambiguous archive that can reframe commonsense notions of what it means to be American or Asian.

This article outlines a new method for surveys to study elections and voter attitudes. Pre-election surveys often suffer from an inability to identify and survey the likely electorate for the upcoming election. We propose a new and inexpensive method to conduct representative surveys of the electorate. We demonstrate the performance of our method in producing a representative sample of the future electorate that can be used to study campaign dynamics and many other issues. We compare pre-election outcome forecasts to election outcomes in seven primary and general election surveys conducted prior to the 2008 and 2010 primary and general elections in three states. The results indicate that the methodology produces representative samples, including in low-turnout elections such as primaries where traditional methods have difficulty consistently sampling the electorate. This new methodology combines Probability Proportional to Size (PPS) sampling, mailed invitation letters, and online administration of the questionnaire. The PPS sample is drawn based on a model employing variables from the publicly available voter file to produce a probability of voting score for each individual voter. The proposed method provides researchers a valuable tool to study the attitudes of the voting public.

Background:
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in older adults. Acceptance of the cholinergic hypothesis led to a search for medications which could enhance central cholinergic activity in this condition. There are now three cholinesterase inhibitors available for the treatment of AD in Canada.
Objectives:To review the currently available cholinesterase inhibitors approved for the treatment of AD in Canada and to provide guidance on who and how to treat with these agents.
Results:Donepezil, rivastigmine, and galantamine are approved for the treatment of AD in Canada. In clinical trails, patients with mild to moderate AD treated with these agents experienced modest improvements in cognition, function, behaviour, and/or global clinical state. The magnitude of benefits seen with each agent appeared to be similar. While to date, there is no convincing evidence that one is more efficacious or effective, they do differ in their pharmacokinetics, additional mechanisms of action, and side effect profiles. Therefore, the selection of agent will be based on considerations such as side effect profiles, ease of administration, personal familiarity/experience, and beliefs about the importance of the noted differences in their pharmacokinetics and additional mechanisms of action.
Conclusion:We believe that these agents should be offered to all individuals with a mild to moderate dementia where Alzheimer’s pathology is felt to be a contributing factor. We view all three available cholinesterase inhibitors as first-line drugs.

Despite the decline in coronary heart disease in many European countries, the disease remains an enormous public health problem. Although we know a great deal about environmental risk factors for coronary heart disease, a heritable component was recognized a long time ago. The earliest and best known examples of how our genetic constitution may determine cardiovascular risk relate to lipoprotein(a), familial hypercholesterolaemia and apolipoprotein E. In the past 20 years a fair number of polymorphisms assessed singly have shown strong associations with the disease but most are subject to poor repeatability. Twins constitute a compelling natural experiment to establish the genetic contribution to coronary heart disease and its risk factors. GenomEUtwin, a recently funded Framework 5 Programme of the European Community, affords the opportunity of comparing the heritability of risk factors in different European Twin Registries. As an illustration we present the heritabilities of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, based on data from over 4000 twin pairs from six different European countries and Australia. Heritabilities for systolic blood pressure are between 52 and 66% and for diastolic blood pressure between 44 and 66%. There is no evidence of sex differences in heritability estimates and very little to no evidence for a significant contribution of shared family environment. A non-twin based prospective case/cohort study of coronary heart disease and stroke (MORGAM) will allow hypotheses relating to cardiovascular disease, generated in the twin cohorts, to be tested prospectively in adult populations. Twin studies have also contributed to our understanding of the life course hypothesis, and GenomEUtwin has the potential to add to this.
