The introduction of deep brain stimulation (DBS) as a treatment for medication-refractory essential tremor in the late 1980s revealed, for the first time, that “chronically” implanted brain hardware had the potential to modulate neurologic function with surprisingly low morbidity. Over time, the therapeutic promise of DBS has become evident in Parkinson's disease and dystonia. In some experienced centers, complex tremor disorders, such as posttraumatic Holmes tremor and the tremor of multiple sclerosis, are being increasingly targeted. More recently, other indications, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourette's syndrome, major depression, and chronic pain, have been proposed. As the field has expanded, our knowledge about potential cognitive side effects of DBS has also expanded. This article reviews the current knowledge regarding the impact of stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus, globus pallidus internus, and ventralis intermedius nucleus of the thalamus on symptoms in essential tremor, Parkinson's disease, and dystonia. Also discussed are the emerging targets, what is known about the cognitive sequelae of DBS, and what has been learned about the complications and therapeutic failures.

MgO thin films having different defect densities are explored in this study using metastable impact electron spectroscopy (MIES), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), temperature programmed desorption (TPD), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Surface point defects on MgO exhibit themselves in both the MIES and UPS spectra as a feature approximately 2 eV above the valance band, whereas extended defects are only observed spectroscopically as a broadening of the O 2p band. The interaction of NO and N2O with the MgO surface as a function of surface defect density is explored. Upon adsorption on MgO thin films at 100K, both NO and N2O show the development of three features which coincide with a standard gas phase N2O spectrum. The saturation coverage of N2O from NO adsorption increases with increasing defect density, indicating that defect sites are mainly responsible for N2O formation. STM images confirm the increase of thin film defect density upon thermal quenching.

These studies have addressed the adsorption of CO on very thin (submonolayer to multilayer) deposits of Cu, Ni, Pd, and Fe on single crystals of Ru and W. The kinetics of the methanation, ethane hydrogenolysis, and cyclohexane dehydrogenation reactions have also been measured over these model bimetallic catalysts. Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) spectra of CO at submonolayer coverages reveal new desorption features which have significantly perturbed peak maxima from those observed on the bulk metals, indicating the unique character of these monolayer metallic films. This behavior has been correlated with LEED, ARUPS, work function, and kinetic measurements.
