Summary
Introduction
Günter Bechly
Insects are by far the most diverse group of multicellular organisms on our planet. Of about 1,625,000 described species of prokaryotes, protoctists, fungi, plants and animals, more than 1 million is represented by arthropods, of which insects constitute the largest group with about 854,000 described species. The estimations of the number of still undescribed species, especially in the vanishing tropical rainforests, are ranging from 2 million to 80 million species! The most species-rich groups within insects are the holometabolous orders Coleoptera (beetles), Hymenoptera (ants, wasps and bees), Diptera (mosquitoes and flies) and Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies). Among the hemimetabolous orders, which lack a pupal stage in their ontogenetic development, the Hemiptera (aphids, scale insects, cicadas and bugs) are the largest group, while all other insect orders have much fewer species.
Even though relatively small animals, the extremely large number of individuals makes insects a very significant part of the total terrestrial biomass in many biotopes. For example, in tropical rainforests, the ants and termites have a higher total biomass than all the vertebrates combined.
Insects are not only diverse in terms of species number and number of individuals, but also in their astonishing anatomical and ecological variability. Insects populate nearly every available habitat on the planet, except for the open seas and the frozen polar regions.

Objective.
To determine whether feedback on antimicrobial use improves physician compliance with local hospital guidelines on antimicrobial prescribing.
Design. In this time series analysis, in which a historical control period was compared with an intervention period, all orders for antimicrobials (except those for surgical prophylaxis) placed from November 1, 2002, through April 30, 2004, were prospectively evaluated by an antimicrobial management team (AMT) for compliance with local hospital guidelines. During the control period, orders were evaluated to determine compliance with hospital guidelines before and after recommendations by the AMT were provided to physicians. Feedback was given for the second 9-month period in the form of a weekly report to prescribing physicians, a monthly hospital newsletter, and a quarterly report to various hospital committees. During the intervention period, orders were evaluated to determine compliance with hospital guidelines before and after recommendations by the AMT were provided to physicians.
Setting. The Veterans Affairs Medical Center, a 110-bed facility, in Louisville, Kentucky.
Participants.Internal medicine physicians and general surgeons.
Results.A total of 2,807 antimicrobial courses were evaluated. Compliance with hospital guidelines before AMT recommendations was 70% during the control period and 74% during the intervention period (P = .02). Compliance after AMT recommendations was 90% during the control period and 93% during the intervention period (P ≤ .01).
Conclusion. The use of feedback had a significantly favorable impact on physician compliance with the hospital's guidelines on antimicrobial prescribing. Use of feedback should be added to the list of interventions that promote appropriate antimicrobial use in the hospital setting.

This paper is a comprehensive review of the state-of-knowledge in the field of radiation effects in glasses that are to be used for the immobilization of high-level nuclear waste and plutonium disposition. The current status and issues in the area of radiation damage processes, defect generation, microstructure development, theoretical methods and experimental methods are reviewed. Questions of fundamental and technological interest that offer opportunities for research are identified.

Pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary gland are usually regarded as benign tumours. We report a case in which a solitary pulmonary metastasis arose from a pleomorphic adenoma of the right parotid gland. The mechanism of metastasis is discussed.
