Increased Glyphosate Tolerance in ‘Aurora Gold’ Hard Fescue (Festuca longifolia)

Studies were conducted in New Jersey and Virginia to evaluate the response of ‘Aurora Gold’ hard fescue, which had undergone five cycles of phenotypic recurrent selection for increased glyphosate tolerance, to direct applications of glyphosate. ‘Discovery’ hard fescue, which had not undergone recurrent selection, was also included in the study. Glyphosate treatments were initiated in early/mid-May and applied once, twice, or three times at 4- to 5-wk intervals at rates ranging from 0.1 to 1.6 kg ae/ha. Aurora Gold was more tolerant to glyphosate than Discovery in all experiments, indicating that recurrent selection was successful in increasing glyphosate tolerance in hard fescue. Single applications of glyphosate at rates ranging from 0.6 to 0.8 kg/ha could be applied to Aurora Gold with minimal injury or stand thinning (<20%), whereas multiple applications of glyphosate could be applied at rates ranging from 0.4 to 0.6 kg/ha. The use of Aurora Gold in areas planted to hard fescue, such as golf course roughs, vineyards, orchards, and landscapes, would allow the integration of direct glyphosate applications into an overall weed management program providing potential economic and environmental benefits.

Summary
Background and objective: The in vitro contracture test with halothane and caffeine is the gold standard for the diagnosis of susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia (MH). However, the sensitivity of the in vitro contracture test is between 97 and 99% and its specificity is 78–94% with the consequence that false-negative as well as false-positive test results are possible. 4-Chloro-m-cresol is potentially a more specific test drug for the in vitro contracture test than halothane or caffeine. This multicentre study was designed to investigate whether an in vitro contracture test with bolus administration of 4-chloro-m-cresol can improve the accuracy of the diagnosis of susceptibility to MH.
Methods: Three hundred and fifty-two patients from 11 European MH laboratories participated in the study. The patients were first classified as MH susceptible, MH normal or MH equivocal by the in vitro contracture test according to the European MH protocol. Muscle specimens surplus to diagnostic requirements were used in this study (MH susceptible = 103 viable samples; MH equivocal = 51; MH normal = 204). 4-Chloro-m-cresol was added to achieve a concentration of 75 μmol L−1 in the tissue bath. The in vitro effects on contracture development and muscle twitch were observed for 60 min.
Results: After bolus administration of 4-chloro-m-cresol, 75 μmol L−1, 99 of 103 MH-susceptible specimens developed marked muscle contractures. In contrast, only two of 204 MH-normal specimens showed an insignificant contracture development following 4-chloro-m-cresol. From these results, a sensitivity rate of 96.1% and a specificity rate of 99.0% can be calculated for the in vitro contracture test with bolus administration of 4-chloro-m-cresol 75 μmol L−1. Forty-three patients were diagnosed as MH equivocal, but only specimens from 16 patients developed contractures in response to 4-chloro-m-cresol, indicating susceptibility to MH.
Conclusions: The in vitro contracture test with halothane and caffeine is well standardized in the European and North American test protocols. However, this conventional test method is associated with the risk of false test results. Therefore, an improvement in the diagnosis of MH is needed. Regarding the results from this multicentre study, the use of 4-chloro-m-cresol could increase the reliability of in vitro contracture testing.

In this paper, based on an article printed on the back of the March 1973 issue of the Pilot Chart of the North Atlantic Ocean, Mr Fricker analyses three collisions that emphasize the necessity for adhering to the concepts of prudence and safety underlying the Rules of the Road; they are no less essential when navigating by radar in reduced visibility. Terms such as ‘right rudder’, readily understood, have not been altered to conform to English Martime parlance.

A paper by Captain J. F. Kemp under this title was published in the April number of this Journal together with some comments on these proposals. Further contributions to the discussion and a reply from Captain Kemp are printed below.
In the April issue of this Journal Captain Kemp has put forward a carefully considered proposal for making the Rule of the Road more effective. His proposal is well considered because he is aware of the audacity which its careful presentation conceals; he is also careful to suggest a change in the Rules only as a basis for discussion. His suggestion is precise, for it is simply to extend Rule 18 to all encounters, or in other words to require both vessels, when crossing or overtaking, to rotate the line of sight in the normal direction as required in Rule 18.

In this paper, which is a revised and up-dated version of an article which appeared on the back of the United States Pilot Chart of the North Pacific Ocean for May 1964, Mr. Fricker, a member of the Maritime Safety Division of the United States Naval Oceanographic Office, first of all analyses world-wide statistics of collision at sea on a geographical basis. He highlights the results of an investigation conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard into the conditions surrounding marine collisions; taking into account the results of this enquiry the author then goes into the common causes of collision. The paper then reviews the whole subject of radar and collision and the interpretation of the Collision Regulations in relation to the use of that aid. Certain collision counter-measures such as particular radar displays, improved lights and sound signals, bridge to bridge communication, &c. are then discussed.
