In 2023, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) launched an updated version of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct. The changes represent substantial and potentially far-reaching implications for business, particularly in the areas of climate change and biodiversity. This article examines the 14 climate-related complaints filed under the Guidelines prior to the adoption of the 2023 Update, showing how many of these cases illustrate the potential interlinkages between the human rights and climate change dimensions of the Guidelines. The article then discusses how the updated provisions may influence future complaints concerning climate change. Based on this analysis, the article concludes that the Guidelines could have been strengthened by the explicit integration of climate change into the scope of corporate human rights responsibilities under the Guidelines.

Governments sometimes adopt policies that are not aligned with their preferences or have not come onto their agendas when doing so is linked to a reward. International organizations can therefore set conditions for coveted membership that include adopting new human rights and regulatory policies. As international organizations increasingly converge around the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, how might they promote national uptake of these guidelines? This article considers the prospects of accession conditionality in answering this question. The focus of the article is on European Union and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) expansion in Central and Eastern Europe, where uptake of business and human rights policies remains comparatively low. The article argues that while these organizations increasingly include business and human rights conditionalities in accession negotiations, there remains significantly greater scope for promoting the Guiding Principles.

Little is known about the early history of the chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus), including the timing and circumstances of its introduction into new cultural environments. To evaluate its spatio-temporal spread across Eurasia and north-west Africa, the authors radiocarbon dated 23 chicken bones from presumed early contexts. Three-quarters returned dates later than those suggested by stratigraphy, indicating the importance of direct dating. The results indicate that chickens did not arrive in Europe until the first millennium BC. Moreover, a consistent time-lag between the introduction of chickens and their consumption by humans suggests that these animals were initially regarded as exotica and only several centuries later recognised as a source of ‘food’.

Objects imported over long distances often have rich biographies, not least a collection of bronze objects found in a peat bog in Estonia that included an elaborate lamp of Roman origin. Combining new scientific approaches with earlier observations and traditional archaeological analysis, the authors reconstruct the provenance, possible itinerary and changing use of the lamp over half a millennium, and across thousands of kilometres. They highlight its variable roles, from luxurious illumination to valuable raw material. The results demonstrate the importance of looking beyond the original time and place of manufacture, and beyond the primary function when constructing the biographies of imported objects.

The spatial pattern of accumulation rate for eastern Kemp Land in the elevation range 1850-2700 m is presented together with observations of the physical parameters of snow temperature, average microwave emissivity (19 GHz, H polarization), distribution of depth hoar and firn-crystal diameter. The broad accumulation pattern in the region was found to be significantly low when compared to other coastal areas of East Antarctica such as Wilkes Land. The low accumulation regime is attributed to low atmospheric moisture transport and low penetration of synoptic cyclonic systems on to the coastal slopes. In the absence of high coastal precipitation, the accumulation rate is determined predominantly by surface snow redistribution processes. Attempts to determine accumulation-rate time series using visible layer, δ18O isotope and electrical conductivity stratigraphies were unsuccessful due to the relatively low coastal accumulation rates (less than 280 kg m-2a-1) and the complex modification of precipitation by redistribution processes.δ18O variations of seemingly cyclic nature observed throughout the cores were interpreted as a product of the snow-dune building and erosion processes, together with general redistribution of snows by the surface wind field, under the influence of mesoscale topographic roughness

A prime input variable to uncoupled ice-sheet models, or for estimating the mass budget of present-day ice sheets, is the distribution of net surface mass balance. In most eases this is extrapolated from relatively few direct measurements over a limited time period, and parameterised in terms of continentality, surface elevation and other broad-scale indicators. Between 1989 and 1995 a series of oversnow traverses around the interior of the Lambert Glacier basin gathered a comprehensive set of data on snow accumulation and surface properties, surface climatology, ice-sheet velocities, elevations and thicknesses. Above the 2000 m level accumulation averages were found to be 76 kg ma−2a−1 (σ = 74), much lower than at similar elevations in Wilkes Land. The traverse route contains three distinct accumulation regimes: a relatively high accumulation zone along the western side despite higher average elevations, a very low accumulation zone in the south due to the effect of inereased continentality and an eastern sector that exhibits a rain-shadow effect in predominantly easterly wind fields. Inter-annual variability is high- with 1993 a colder year, recording only half the longer term average accumulation over the portion of the route that was measured.
