Environmental context predicts state fluctuations in negative symptoms in youth at clinical high risk for psychosis

Background
Negative symptoms (avolition, anhedonia, asociality) are a prevalent symptom in those across the psychosis-spectrum and also occur at subclinical levels in the general population. Recent work has begun to examine how environmental contexts (e.g. locations) influence negative symptoms. However, limited work has evaluated how environments may contribute to negative symptoms among youth at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR). The current study uses Ecological Momentary Assessment to assess how four environmental contexts (locations, activities, social interactions, social interaction method) impact state fluctuations in negative symptoms in CHR and healthy control (CN) participants.
MethodsCHR youth (n = 116) and CN (n = 61) completed 8 daily surveys for 6 days assessing negative symptoms and contexts.
ResultsMixed-effects modeling demonstrated that negative symptoms largely varied across contexts in both groups. CHR participants had higher negative symptoms than CN participants in most contexts, but groups had similar symptom reductions during recreational activities and phone call interactions. Among CHR participants, negative symptoms were elevated in several contexts, including studying/working, commuting, eating, running errands, and being at home.
ConclusionsResults demonstrate that negative symptoms dynamically change across some contexts in CHR participants. Negative symptoms were more intact in some contexts, while other contexts, notably some used to promote functional recovery, may exacerbate negative symptoms in CHR. Findings suggest that environmental factors should be considered when understanding state fluctuations in negative symptoms among those at CHR participants.
Micropores and micropermeable texture in alkali feldspars: geochemical and geophysical implications

Scanning Electron Microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy show that normal, slightly turbid alkali feldspars from many plutonic rocks contain high concentrations of micropores, from ∼1 µm to a few nm in length, typically 0.1 µm. There may be 109 pores mm−3 and porosities as high as 4.75 vol.% have been observed, although ∼1% is typical. Only ‘pristine’ feldspars, which are dark coloured when seen in the massive rock, such as in larvikite and some rapakivi granites, are almost devoid of pores. Weathering enlarges prexisting pores and exploits sub-regularly spaced edge dislocations which occur in semicoherent microperthites, but the underlying textures which lead to skeletal grains in soils are inherited from the high temperature protolith. Most pores are devoid of solid inclusions, but a variety of solid particles has been found. Although the presence of fluid in pores cannot usually be demonstrated directly, crushing experiments have shown that Ar and halogens reside in fluids. Some pores are ‘negative crystals’, often with re-entrants defined by the {110} Adularia habit, while others have curved surfaces often tapering to thin, cusp-shaped apices. The variable shape of pores accounts for the ability of some pores to retain fluid although the texture is elsewhere micropermeable, as shown by 18O exchange experiments.
Apart from rare, primary pores in pristine feldspar, pore development is accompanied by profound recrystallization of the surrounding microtexture, with partial loss of coherency in cryptoperthites. This leads to marked ‘deuteric coarsening’ forming patch and vein perthite, and replacement of ‘tweed’ orthoclase by twinned microcline. The Ab- and Or-rich phases in patch perthite are made up of discrete subgrains and the cuspate pores often develop at triple-junctions between them. Coarsened lamellar and vein perthites are composed of microporous subgrain textures. These ‘unzipping’ reactions result from fluid-feldspar interactions, at T <450°C in hypersolvus syenites and T < 350°C in a subsolvus granites, and are driven by elastic strain-energy in coherent cryptoperthites and in tweed textures. Further textural change may continue to surface temperatures. In salic igneous rocks there is a general connection between turbidity and the type of mafic mineral present; pristine alkali feldspars occur in salic igneous rocks with a preponderance of anhydrous mafic phases.
Because alkali feldspar is so abundant (and larger, 10 μm pores have previously been described in plagioclase), intracrystal porosity is a non-trivial feature of a large volume of the middle and upper crust. The importance of pores in the following fields is discussed: 39Ar/40Ar dating and ‘thermochronometry’; oxygen exchange; Rb and Sr diffusion; weathering; experimental low-temperature dissolution; development of secondary porosity and diagenetic albitization; leachable sources of metals; nuclear waste isolation; deformation; seismic anisotropy; electrical conductivity. Important questions concern the temperature range of the development of the textures and their stability during burial and transport into the deeper crust.
A glacial readvance during retreat of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet, British Columbia central coast

Descriptions of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet retreat after the last glacial maximum have included short-lived readvances occurring during the Older and Younger Dryas stadial periods and into the Holocene, but identification of these events has been largely limited to southwest and central British Columbia and northwest Washington State. We present evidence of a late Pleistocene readvance of Cordilleran ice occurring on the central coast of British Columbia on Calvert Island, between northern Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii. Evidence is provided by sedimentological and paleoecological information contained in a sedimentary sequence combined with geomorphic mapping of glacial features in the region. Results indicate that a cold climate existed between 15.1 and 14.3 cal ka BP and that ice advanced to, and then retreated from, the western edge of the island between 14.2 and 13.8 cal ka BP. These data provide the first evidence of a major fluctuation in the retreating ice sheet margin in this region and suggest that a cold climate was a major factor in ice readvance. These data contribute to the understanding of past temperature, ice loading and crustal response, the nature of ice margin retreat, and the paleoenvironment of an understudied area of the Pacific Northwest.

Chironomid (midge) remains analyzed from an 8.95-m-long sediment core from Marion Lake reveal successional changes over the last 12,000 yr since deglaciation. A late-glacial Heterotrissocladius-dominated association characterizes the earliest sediments. Succeeding this community, at the onset of the Holocene, is a Tanytarsini-dominated assemblage. The transition between these communities occurs during a time of rapid climatic amelioration, preceding an early Holocene xerothermic interval. The late-glacial fossil fauna is suggestive of more northerly affinities. Similar sequences have been reported in late-glacial lake sediments elsewhere in North America and in Europe. The composite picture of these chironomid assemblages suggests the gradual retreat of a formerly widely distributed, cold stenothermous fauna. The response of the chironomid community accords well with paleoclimatic inferences based on pollen data at the lake. Subsequent postglacial changes are less pronounced and most are probably attributable to the gradual shallowing of the basin. Chironomid remains from shallow, weakly stratified lakes may yield valuable paleoclimatological data.

Pollen, plant macrofossil, chironomid, and lithological analyses of late-glacial sediment from Pine Ridge Pond all indicate that the warming following deglaciation was punctuated on two separate occasions by a return to colder climes; initially by a brief and moderate cold episode (the Killarney Oscillation), followed shortly by the Younger Dryas. The Killarney Oscillation, AMS 14C dated at between 11,290 and 10,960 yr B.P., is characterized by abrupt and simultaneous increases in Betula (birch) pollen and Betula glandulosa (dwarf birch) macrofossils and a decline in tree pollen. The Younger Dryas is distinguished by the reversion of a short-lived closed Picea (spruce) forest to a prolonged forest-tundra stage (ca. 10, 820 to 9500(?) yr B.P.), during which macrofossils of arctic/alpine plants such as Salix herbaces, Cassiope hypnoides, Armeria maritima, and Thalictrum alpinum make their sole late-glacial appearance. Chironomid-inferred summer surface-water temperatures indicate a cooling of approximately 8 and 12°C during the Killarney Oscillation and Younger Dryas, respectively, and coarse-sand analysis indicates increased erosion on the landscape during these same intervals.

We generate a multi-proxy sub-centennial-scale reconstruction of environmental change during the past two millennia from Itilliq Lake, Baffin Island, Arctic Canada. Our reconstruction arises from a finely subsectioned 210Pb- and 14C-dated surface sediment core and includes measures of organic matter (e.g., chlorophyll a; carbon–nitrogen ratio) and insect (Diptera: Chironomidae) assemblages. Within the past millennium, the least productive, and by inference coldest, conditions occurred ca. AD 1700–1850, late in the Little Ice Age. The 2000-yr sediment record also reveals an episode of reduced organic matter deposition during the 6th–7th century AD; combined with the few other records comparable in resolution that span this time interval from Baffin Island, we suggest that this cold episode was experienced regionally. A comparable cold climatic episode occurred in Alaska and western Canada at this time, suggesting that the first millennium AD cold climate anomaly may have occurred throughout the Arctic. Dramatic increases in aquatic biological productivity at multiple trophic levels are indicated by increased chlorophyll a concentrations since AD 1800 and chironomid concentrations since AD 1900, both of which have risen to levels unprecedented over the past 2000 yr.

Chironomid stratigraphic analyses of sediment from Hippa Lake, Queen Charlotte Islands, B.C., revealed a fossil chironomid record unlike that reported for deeper lakes of southwestern British Columbia, but similar to an arctic Alaskan sequence. Little evidence of trophic succession or climatic change was noted.
Chironomids, including Corynocera nr. ambigua Zett., rapidly colonized the lake. Because the known adults of Corynocera Zett. are brachypterous, the early arrival of C. nr. ambigua at Hippa Lake suggested either that this species survived in a Queen Charlotte glacial refugium, that chironomids can disperse very rapidly, even without active flight, or the existence of a previously undescribed Corynocera species with well-developed wings.
Elsewhere, fossils of the C. ambigua group are commonly associated with fossil oospores of Chara Valliant and Nitella Agardh. North American records are inconsistent, although similar correlations existed in some coastal lakes of British Columbia.

Deviations from ellipticity in the bulges of edge-on disk galaxies, seen as ”boxy“, ”peanut-shaped“, or “X-shaped“ isophotes, have been known for some time (Jarvis 1986, Whitmore & Bell 1988). Contrary to earlier proposals that these features represent accreted material, recent numerical work (Combes et al. 1990; Raha et al. 1991) suggests that they form when the bars in barred galaxies experience a vertical bending instability and deform out of the disk plane. We have found this latter mechanism at work in simulations in which a bar is induced when a large disk galaxy accretes a small companion galaxy, thus incorporating the mechanism into the evolutionary framework of galaxy interactions. In support of this picture we present observations of Hickson 87a, an edge-on S0 galaxy whose morphological peculiarities exactly match those seen in the simulation.

The measurement of household welfare is one of the most compelling yet demanding areas in economics. To place the analysis of inequality and poverty within an economic framework where individuals are making decisions about current and lifetime incomes and expenditures is a difficult task, made all the more challenging by the complexity of the decision-making process in which households are involved and the variety of constraints they face. This 1994 book examines the conceptual and practical difficulties of making inferences from observed behaviour. It addresses the problems of making comparisons across a range of very different households and discusses how data for such comparisons should be collected. The contributions, from experts from Europe, North America and Australia, have the unifying theme that there is a strong relationship between theoretical concepts from microeconomics and the appropriate use of micro data in evaluating household welfare.
