The main objective of this work was to evaluate technologies that have potential for monitoring aspects related to spatial and temporal variability of soil nutrients and pasture yield and for support to decision making by the farmers. Three types of sensors were evaluated: an electromagnetic induction sensor, an active optical sensor and a capacitance probe. The results are relevant for the selection of the adequate sensing system for each particular application and to open new perspectives for other works that would allow the testing, calibration and validation of the sensors in a wider range of pasture production conditions and rainfall patterns, characteristic of the Mediterranean region.

Cysticercosis, a leading cause of acquired epilepsy in developing countries, has been controlled or eradicated in industrialized countries. This paradigm has recently been challenged, with human neurocysticercosis (NCC) being increasingly diagnosed in these countries. In order to assess the NCC burden in Portugal, a retrospective study on NCC hospitalizations (2006–2013) was conducted based on the national database on hospital morbidity: 357 hospitalized cases were detected. NCC was most frequent in the following age groups: 20–64 years (n = 197, 55·2%) >64 years (n = 111, 31·1%), and <20 years (n = 49, 13·7%). In the Norte and Centro regions cases tended to be older than in the Lisboa and Vale do Tejo Region. The results raise concerns for imported and autochthonous disease, suggesting the Lisboa and Vale do Tejo Region, due to its higher frequency of cases at younger ages, as a priority for research and intervention, and further suggest that NCC should be under surveillance (notifiable). The National Observatory of Cysticercosis and Taeniasis has been established and will define NCC cases as well as monitoring and surveillance.

Ceramic barriers avoid catalyst diffusion to produce better multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNT) on carbon fiber fabrics (CF). We developed a simple method to produce efficiently a silica layer from TEOS pyrolysis at similar conditions of CNT growth from camphor and ferrocene mixtures. This protective layer prevents iron diffusion and allows the vertical alignment of CNTs.

Single crystalline colorless α-Al2O3 samples were implanted with several fluences of Fe+ ions in the range of 1×1016 to 5×1017 Fe+ cm-2 at room temperature. Optical absorption and luminescence measurements were carried out before and after annealing in reducing and oxidizing atmospheres. The structural changes were studied with RBS/channeling and x-ray diffraction. After implantation, the damage induces a brownish coloration in the samples for fluences below 2×1017 Fe+ cm-2. The optical spectra are characterized by an absorption band centered at 200 nm. This band is strongly reduced after annealing at 1100 °C in reducing atmosphere and a new well-defined band develops around 350 nm. This new band shifts to lower values with the implanted fluence, which is an indication of its correlation with the dimensions of the iron precipitates formed in the implanted region. The existence of these precipitates was confirmed by x-ray diffraction and TEM. The samples implanted with fluences above 1×1016 Fe+ cm-2 annealed in oxidizing atmosphere display different optical absorption spectra, with respect to those annealed in reducing atmosphere, characterized by an increase in the intensity of the peak at 200 nm. Luminescence measurements show the presence of F and F+ centers in the samples. The existence of these defects can be explained by the need of charge compensation and strain release due to the formation of mixed iron oxide or metallic precipitates.

The magnetoresistive behavior of granular thin films prepared by Fe and Co implantation in Ag thin films is reported. Ag thin films (∼2000Å) were implanted with Fe or Co at fluences up to 8×1016 at./cm2. The magnetoresistive response obtained after implantation was found to increase with the implanted fluence. A further increase by a factor of 3–4 can be achieved annealing the films in a conventional furnace at 620 K under vacuum. The best value of the magnetoresistance obtained so far is 9% at 10 K for a film implanted with Co at a fluence of 8×1016 at./cm2.

The effects of irradiation with thermal neutrons on LiNbO3 single crystals doped with Hf and Hf,Mg were studied with ion beam and hyperfme interaction techniques, using Hf as a probe. In crystals where Hf occupies both Li and Nb sites, the fraction in Nb sites is strongly reduced after irradiation. The initial situation is recovered after thermal annealing at 973 K, in air.
