Creep tests carried out on specimens of isotropic ice containing a monocrystalline inclusion allow us to observe some strain heterogeneities that develop during the deformation of polycrystalline ice. Different kinds of heterogeneities, some of them leading to strain localization, are observed and described, and mechanisms are proposed to explain how they arise. However, when the inclusion has a very regular shape with no geometric singularity (e.g. circular shape) and is embedded in a fine-grained isotropic matrix, the observations lead us to assume homogeneous deformation of the inclusion, with no strain localization except that associated with basal glide.

The main homogenization schemes used to model the behaviour of polycrystalline ice are assessed by studying the particular case of a two-dimensional polycrystal which represents natural S2–columnar ice. The results of the uniform-stress, uniform-strain-rate and one-site self-consistent models are compared to finite-element computations. The comparisons were made using the same model of grain, described as a continuous transversely isotropic medium, in the linear and non-linear cases. The uniform-stress and uniform-strain-rate models provide upper and lower bounds for the macroscopic fluidity which are too far from each other to be useful when a degree of anisotropy relevant to ice is considered. Although the self-consistent model gives a weak representation of the interaction between a grain and its surroundings, due to the strong anisotropy of the ice crystal, the resulting macroscopic behaviour is found to be acceptable when compared to the results from finite-element computations.

Major advances in understanding the plasticity of ice have been made during the past 60 years with the development of studies of the flow of glaciers and, recently, with the analysis of deep ice cores in Antarctica and Greenland. Recent experimental investigations clearly show that the plastic deformation of the ice single crystal and polycrystal is produced by intermittent dislocation bursts triggered by long-range interaction of dislocations. Such dislocation avalanches are associated with the formation of dislocation patterns in the form of slip lines and slip bands, which exhibit long-range correlations and scale invariance. Long-range dislocation interactions appear to play an essential role in primary creep of polycrystals and dynamic recrystallization. The large plastic anisotropy of the ice crystal is at the origin of large strain and stress heterogeneities within grains. The use of full- field approaches is now a compulsory proceeding to model the intracrystalline heterogeneities that develop in polycrystals. Ice is now highly regarded among the materials science community. It is considered a model material for understanding deformation processes of crystalline materials and polycrystal modeling.

During the deformation of polar ice, a fabric develops which results in a macroscopically anisotropic behaviour. Since the plastic anisotropy of the ice single crystal is very high, the effect of a strong (single maximum) fabric on the macroscopic flow law cannot be neglected when simulating the flow of an ice sheet. As this is already a difficult task when using the familiar isotropic power law for ice, the fabric evolution and related macroscopic mechanical behaviour model, to be implemented in such a simulation, must be realistic yet simple enough to achieve results within a reasonable level of complexity, at least as a first step.
To this aim, we propose to model polar ice as a transversely isotropic medium; while simplifying the problem, this captures the essential features of the in-situ observed fabrics. The macroscopic mechanical behaviour of the ice polycrystal is obtained by using an orientation distribution function (ODF) for the c axes of the grains, which characterizes the fabric, and a self-consistent scheme, considering each single crystal as transversely isotropic. The evolution of the ODF is described by a conservation equation. In the first stage, this model was run in the simple cases of uniaxial compression and tension along the orthotropy symmetry axis.

FFQ data can be used to characterise dietary patterns for diet–disease association studies. In the present study, we evaluated three previously defined dietary patterns – ‘subsistence foods’, market-based ‘processed foods’ and ‘fruits and vegetables’ – among a sample of Yup'ik people from Southwest Alaska. We tested the reproducibility and reliability of the dietary patterns, as well as the associations of these patterns with dietary biomarkers and participant characteristics. We analysed data from adult study participants who completed at least one FFQ with the Center for Alaska Native Health Research 9/2009–5/2013. To test the reproducibility of the dietary patterns, we conducted a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of a hypothesised model using eighteen food items to measure the dietary patterns (n 272). To test the reliability of the dietary patterns, we used the CFA to measure composite reliability (n 272) and intra-class correlation coefficients for test–retest reliability (n 113). Finally, to test the associations, we used linear regression (n 637). All factor loadings, except one, in CFA indicated acceptable correlations between foods and dietary patterns (r>0·40), and model-fit criteria were >0·90. Composite and test–retest reliability of the dietary patterns were, respectively, 0·56 and 0·34 for ‘subsistence foods’, 0·73 and 0·66 for ‘processed foods’, and 0·72 and 0·54 for ‘fruits and vegetables’. In the multi-predictor analysis, the dietary patterns were significantly associated with dietary biomarkers, community location, age, sex and self-reported lifestyle. This analysis confirmed the reproducibility and reliability of the dietary patterns in the present study population. These dietary patterns can be used for future research and development of dietary interventions in this underserved population.

Objective
An FFQ developed by the Center for Alaska Native Health Research for studies in Yup'ik people includes market foods and subsistence foods such as moose, seal, waterfowl and salmon that may be related to disease risk. Because the FFQ contains >100 food items, we sought to characterize dietary patterns more simply for use in ongoing pharmacogenomics studies.
DesignExploratory factor analysis was used to derive a small number of ‘factors’ that explain a substantial amount of the variation in the Yup'ik diet. We estimated factor scores and measured associations with demographic characteristics and biomarkers.
SettingSouth-west Alaska, USA.
SubjectsYup'ik people (n 358) aged ≥18 years.
ResultsWe identified three factors that each accounted for ≥10 % of the common variance: the first characterized by ‘processed foods’ (e.g. salty snacks, sweetened cereals); the second by ‘fruits and vegetables’ (e.g. fresh citrus, potato salad); and the third by ‘subsistence foods’ (seal or walrus soup, non-oily fish). Participants from coastal communities had higher values for the ‘subsistence’ factor, whereas participants from inland communities had higher values for the ‘fruits and vegetables’ factor. A biomarker of marine intake, δ15N, was correlated with the ‘subsistence’ factor, whereas a biomarker of corn- and sugarcane-based market food intake, δ13C, was correlated with ‘processed foods’.
ConclusionsThe exploratory factor analysis identified three factors that appeared to reflect dietary patterns among Yup'ik based on associations with participant characteristics and biomarkers. These factors will be useful for chronic disease studies in this population.

Four charcoal samples from loess key sites in Austria, Moravia, and western Ukraine were submitted to ABOx (acid-base oxidation) pretreatment to compare results with the classical ABA (acid-base-acid) method. For this purpose, charcoal samples already dated in Groningen laboratory were selected from 3 archaeological sites: Molodova V in western Ukraine (subunit 10–1, ∼32.6 ka BP), Willendorf II in Austria (unit C4, ∼32.1 ka BP and unit C8, ∼38.9 ka BP) and Vedrovice V in Moravia (unit 4, upper part of Bohunice soil, ∼39.5 ka BP). Each selected charcoal sample has been homogenized and divided into 3 subsamples, which were submitted to ABA in Groningen and to ABA and ABOx pretreatments in Oxford. The results show that the ABOx dates are older than the ABA dates. Nevertheless, down to ∼40 ka BP ABOx and Groningen ABA dates appear in good agreement within a time interval of ∼1 millennium at 1σ. However, Groningen ABA pretreatment produces older dates than the Oxford ABA pretreatment. Both Oxford ABOx and Groningen ABA pretreatments provide sets of dates in good agreement with the chronological background of each selected site.

Summary
In this chapter, we examine how language relates to executive function (EF) in preschoolers. EF consists of higher cognitive functions that are involved in the control of thought, action, and emotion and that have been linked to neural systems involving the prefrontal cortex. Despite its importance, the meaning of EF has remained elusive (Lehto, Juujäarvi, Kooistra, & Pulkkinen, 2003). Broadly defined, EF is “an umbrella term for all of the complex set of cognitive processes that underlie flexible goal-directed responses to novel or difficult situations” (Hughes & Graham, 2002, p. 131). Recent empirical work has clarified the composition and development of EF. Factor analytic studies have identified working memory, flexibility, and inhibition as three key components of executive function (Lehto et al., 2003; Miyake et al., 2000).
EF and its development has recently received considerable attention in developmental psychology, and several studies have charted the developmental trajectory of children's performance on numerous EF tasks (see Diamond, 2002; Zelazo & Müller, 2002, for reviews). This interest has been driven by findings that (a) EF is implicated in various developmental disorders such as autism (e.g., Hill, 2004; Pennington & Ozonoff, 1996; Russell, 1997) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (e.g., Barkley, 2004; Mulas, Capilla, & Fernández, 2006), and (b) the development of executive function is significantly correlated with the development of social understanding, specifically false belief understanding (e.g., Frye, Zelazo, & Palfai, 1995; Perner & Lang, 1999; Sabbagh, Xu, Carlson, Moses, & Lee, 2006).

Decisive advances in the fields of nanosciences and nanotechnologies are intimately related to the development of new instruments and of related writing schemes and methodologies. Therefore we have recently proposed exploitation of the nano-structuring potential of a highly Focused Ion Beam as a tool, to overcome intrinsic limitations of current nano-fabrication techniques and to allow innovative patterning schemes urgently needed in many nanoscience challenges. In this work, we will first detail a very high resolution FIB instrument we have developed specifically to meet these nano-fabrication requirements. Then we will introduce and illustrate some advanced FIB processing schemes. These patterning schemes are (i) Ultra thin membranes as an ideal template for FIB nanoprocessing. (ii) Local defect injection for magnetic thin film direct patterning. (iii) Functionalization of graphite substrates to prepare 2D-organized arrays of clusters. (iv) FIB engineering of the optical properties of microcavities.

Planar InAs/InP quantum dot microcavities using multi-layer SiO2/Ta2O5 Bragg reflectors have been studied in emission. The spectra exhibit collection optics-limited cavity linewidths of ∼1meV with the occasional ∼200μeV single-dot emission. Measurements as a function of incident power show quantum dot saturation behavior, with transfer of oscillator strength to the wetting layer outside the cavity stop band. Saturation behavior at fixed pump power is also observed as a function of decreasing temperature. Dispersion measurements as a function of emission angle show polarization splitting in qualitative agreement with theory.
