The intent of this document is to highlight practical recommendations in a concise format designed to assist physicians, nurses, and infection preventionists at acute-care hospitals in implementing and prioritizing their catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) prevention efforts. This document updates the Strategies to Prevent Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections in Acute-Care Hospitals published in 2014. It is the product of a collaborative effort led by SHEA, the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), the American Hospital Association (AHA), and The Joint Commission.

Context
The demand of palliative care is increasing due to the aging population and treatment hesitancy or intentional avoidance compromises symptom management.
ObjectivesTo identify patient beliefs associated with medication hesitancy by using the theory of planned behavior (TPB) namely, attitudes, subjective norms, behavioral intention, and perceived behavioral control associated with medication hesitancy or intentional noncompliance by avoidance.
MethodsThe Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guideline was followed to conduct a systematic literature search involving the CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO databases from inception until March 2022. Hand-searched articles from reference lists and gray literature were included. Thematic analysis was conducted on qualitative data and triangulated with quantitative data.
ResultsAbout 554 articles were retrieved from the literature search and 17 articles were included based on the eligibility criteria. Three subthemes that were identified under TPB constructs were attitude: negative attitude toward medications, passive attitude toward illness and inaccurate information about disease or medication; one subtheme was identified under subjective norms: perceived negative opinions from others; and one subtheme was identified under perceived behavioral control: perception of manageable symptoms. Quantitative data provided triangulation of qualitative findings related to fear of addiction and side effects, feelings of hopelessness, unclear direction and information, social stigma, endurable symptoms, and illness as determinants for medication avoidance.
Significance of resultsThis systematic review highlighted some patient beliefs related to medication hesitancy or avoidance. Clinicians should take patient beliefs and concerns into consideration when creating treatment regimens for people receiving palliative care to optimize medication adherence and the quality of care.

Objective:
To describe the evolution of respiratory antibiotic prescribing during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic across 3 large hospitals that maintained antimicrobial stewardship services throughout the pandemic.
Design:Retrospective interrupted time-series analysis.
Setting:A multicenter study was conducted including medical and intensive care units (ICUs) from 3 hospitals within a Canadian epicenter for COVID-19.
Methods:Interrupted time-series analysis was used to analyze rates of respiratory antibiotic utilization measured in days of therapy per 1,000 patient days (DOT/1,000 PD) in medical units and ICUs. Each of the first 3 waves of the pandemic were compared to the baseline.
Results:Within the medical units, use of respiratory antibiotics increased during the first wave of the pandemic (rate ratio [RR], 1.76; 95% CI, 1.38–2.25) but returned to the baseline in waves 2 and 3 despite more COVID-19 admissions. In ICU, the use of respiratory antibiotics increased in wave 1 (RR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.16–1.46) and wave 2 of the pandemic (RR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.11–1.33) and returned to the baseline in the third wave, which had the most COVID-19 admissions.
Conclusions:After an initial surge in respiratory antibiotic prescribing, we observed the normalization of prescribing trends at 3 large hospitals throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This trend may have been due to the timely generation of new research and guidelines developed with frontline clinicians, allowing for the active application of new research to clinical practice.

Selexipag is an enteral, selective prostacyclin IP receptor agonist approved for pulmonary hypertension in adults. There are few reports of its use in children and none in infants. We report the first transition of an infant (11.5 months, 8.6 kg) from intravenous treprostinil (40 ng/kg/minute) to enteral selexipag (400 mcg twice daily) with a good response and no adverse effects.

Since the publication of “A Compendium of Strategies to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections in Acute Care Hospitals” in 2008, prevention of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) has become a national priority. Despite improvements, preventable HAIs continue to occur. The 2014 updates to the Compendium were created to provide acute care hospitals with up-to-date, practical, expert guidance to assist in prioritizing and implementing their HAI prevention efforts. It is the product of a highly collaborative effort led by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the American Hospital Association (AHA), the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), and The Joint Commission, with major contributions from representatives of a number of organizations and societies with content expertise, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS), the Society for Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), the Society for Hospital Medicine (SHM), and the Surgical Infection Society (SIS).

We recently developed a novel floating-potential dielectrophoretic method to selectively position individual single-walled carbon nanotubes between two floating electrodes while the bundles of nanotubes and impurities were attracted into the region between two control electrodes. In this study, we investigated effects of several process parameters including electric field distribution, electric field frequency, and solution media in order to understand the physical mechanisms of this dielectrophoretic process and to improve its efficiency. Results showed that both the magnitude and the direction of electrical force applied onto the nanotubes can be tailored by changing these process parameters. It was found that a 1 wt% sodium dodecyl sulfate in deionized water is an efficient solution for separating bundles of nanotubes into individual nanotubes and aligning individual nanotubes with a clean surface between two electrical contacts in comparison to N,N-dimethylformamide, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,2-dichlorobenzene, 1,1-dichloromethane, ethanol, and isopropanol solutions. The fabricated carbon nanotube devices exhibit electronic properties comparable to nanotube transistors and interconnects fabricated by other methods.
