Sharks are scarce in much of the Caribbean due to widespread depletion. Trinidad and Tobago, in the southern Caribbean, is a shark meat consumer and international exporter of dried shark fins. Despite limited fisheries management there is a small Marine Protected Area (MPA; 7 km2) in urbanised southwest Tobago, but its effect on sharks and rays (elasmobranchs) is unknown. The rural northeast is a recently designated UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve with a significant marine component and plans for a large MPA, but no baseline data for elasmobranchs exist. Given the local importance of elasmobranchs and a newly drafted Sustainable Shark and Ray Management Plan, we used baited remote underwater video stations within a 40 m depth contour at 270 randomly generated points around Tobago to: (i) establish a baseline of species richness and relative abundance, (ii) investigate the influence of season, habitat relief, depth and water temperature on relative abundance, and (iii) investigate spatial variation in relative abundance. Caribbean reef sharks, nurse sharks, and southern stingrays were observed at all sites, the latter two more frequently in the urbanised southwest. Shark diversity was unexpectedly high in the northeast, driven by rarer species (sharpnose, smoothhound, tiger, scalloped hammerhead, great hammerhead) only observed there. Habitat relief, depth and season likely influence relative abundance of elasmobranchs around Tobago, but research is needed to elucidate species-level effects. Shark species richness in northeast Tobago is high for the Caribbean, warranting research attention, while the larger MPA presents an opportunity to strengthen elasmobranch management.

Objective
Food cost is an important factor influencing the consumption of nutritious foods and subsequent chronic disease risk. The present study compared the cost of branded food products with their generic equivalents across a range of food categories.
SettingThe survey was conducted within two major supermarket chains across six locations in Sydney, Australia (n 12).
DesignPrice differences were calculated for ‘core’ (nutrient dense and low in energy) and ‘extra’ (high in undesirable nutrients and/or energy) packaged foods (n 22) between generic and branded items.
ResultsA cost saving of 44 % was found by purchasing generic over branded products across all food categories. The most significant savings were for core foods, such as bread and cereals, and the smallest cost savings were seen for fruit products. There was little variation in cost saving between branded and generic products by socio-economic status of the supermarket location.
ConclusionsThe large price differential between branded and generic food products implies that consumers, particularly those on lower incomes, could benefit financially from purchasing generic items. The promotion of core generic products may be an effective strategy to assist people on lower incomes to meet dietary guidelines.

In mice homozygous for the asebia mutation (abJ/abJ) the sebaceous glands were small and the sebaceous cells abnormal, the fully grown hair follicles were twice as long as those in wild-type (+ / +) mice, the catagen and telogen follicles were abnormal and, because the active phase of the hair cycle was longer than in + / + mice, the initiation of the second hair cycle was delayed. The abnormalities in the sebaceous glands and in catagen and telogen follicles were also present in abJ/abJ embryonic skin grown on a nude host but anagen of the second hair cycle commenced at about the same time in abJ / abJ and + / + grafts. When recombinants incorporating mutant or wild-type epidermis and dermis were grown on a nude host, the abnormalities in the sebaceous glands and the catagen and telogen follicles were only observed in the recombinants incorporating abJ / abJ epidermis. It was concluded that mutant activity in the epidermis was responsible for the abnormalities in the sebaceous glands and in catagen and telogen follicles and that mutant activity at some site distant from the skin was responsible for the abnormalities in the timing of the hair cycles.

The hairs and follicles from mice carrying the naked (N) gene have been examined using both scanning and transmission electron microscopy in addition to light microscopy. Fibre cuticle cells and occasionally cortical cells were absent from the follicles of N / + mice when the base of the hair was growing. In N / N follicles there was a frequent lack of both cuticle and cortical cells throughout the growth phase of the follicles. Abnormalities were also observed in the manner in which the synthesized keratin was deposited in the fibres. The possible mode of action of the N gene is discussed in the light of these results.
