Berlin and Kay (1969) present strong evidence that “all languages share a universal system of basic colour categorization” and that “the basic color-term inventories of most languages expand through time by lexicalizing these categories in a highly constrained, universal order” (Kay and McDaniel 1978:610). The validity of these conclusions has also been demonstrated by Collier et al. (1976) and by Kay and McDaniel (1978). The evolutionary process identified by Berlin and Kay can be represented schematically as follows:
where the arrow may be read ‘is encoded before’ (Kay and McDaniel 1978: 615). In other words, languages proceed through a series of stages in the development of their basic colour-term lexicon, with the most simplistic system containing only terms for white (light) and black (dark). Any expansion of this fundamental system will first result in the addition of a term for red and then in the addition of a term for green or yellow. If further expansion takes place, “yellow or green, whichever did not emerge at the previous stage, now emerges” (Berlin and Kay 1969:18), followed by terms for blue and brown. When a system develops beyond Stage VI, “there is a rapid expansion to the full roster of eleven basic color categories,” although no particular order of appearance among terms for purple, pink, orange, or gray has been ascertained (Berlin and Kay 1969:21-22).

Summary
Within the field of historical-comparative linguistics today, it has become a well-established procedure to use typological data to evaluate the plausibility of reconstructions established through comparative and/or internal methodology. In short, “reconstructions which are typologically sound … should be more highly valued that competing reconstructions which … [are] not” (Shields 2011: 553). However, in some recent research of mine (Shields 2013, forthcoming), I argue that “instead of limiting the number of potentially viable reconstructions, linguistic typology can at times actually expand their number by bringing to light heretofore unrecognized explanatory formulations for phenomena in particular languages or linguistic stocks” (Shields forthcoming). That is, because “the degree of cross-linguistic similarity that recent studies have uncovered suggests that forces in language are pushing toward the selection of particular source material and movement along particular paths propelled by certain common mechanisms of change” (Bybee, Perkins, Pagliuca 1995: 17), “such paths of linguistic development can be sought in the prehistories of languages or linguistic stocks in which they may not, at first glance, be evident” (Shields 2013: 148). In this brief paper, I wish to provide another example of how linguistic typology can itself suggest a novel etymology – in this case an etymology for the Indo-European root *bheu-‘be.’
According to the traditional view, “words for ‘be,’ denoting existence and serving as the copula, are mostly derived from two IE roots” – *es-(cf. OPruss. asmai ‘am’, Hitt. Esmi ‘am’, Gk. esti ‘ is’, Skt. asti ‘is’) and *bheu-(cf. OPruss. bēi ‘was’, OE bēo ‘am’, OCS by ‘was’, Skt. bhavati ‘is’) – although some “other roots, meaning ‘remain, stay’, ‘stand’, or ‘sit’ have furnished some of the forms” which came to constitute the well-known suppletive paradigm (Buck 1949: 633; cf. also Mallory, Adams 1997: 53). On the basis of semantic evidence from dialects such as Greek, it is supposed (Buck 1949: 633) that *bheu-“evidently had the primary sense of ‘come into being, become’ “ (cf. Gk. phuomai ‘grow, become’).

Hibbing et al. contend that individual differences in political ideology can be substantially accounted for in terms of differences in a single psychological factor, namely, strength of negativity bias. We argue that, given the multidimensional structure of ideology, a better explanation of ideological variation will take into account both individual differences in negativity bias and differences in empathic concern.

In this brief paper it is proposed that the problematic Gothic genitive plural suffix in -ē may derive from a grammaticalized deictic particle. Typological and specifically Indo-European evidence for the derivation of genitive markers from deictic particles is presented in support of this hypothesis.

In this paper it is proposed that Germanic locative adverbs in *-on- bear an etymological relationship to Hittite ablatives in -anza and therefore yield additional evidence for the archaic nature of the Germanic dialect group.
