Summary
The ‘sexual body’ is at once the sexed body identified as male, female, or non-binary, and the body that engages in sexual acts, experiences desire, and is perceived as an erotic object. This chapter explores a wide range of ideas about and experiences of the sexual body in pre-modern European, Native American, Chinese, Islamic, Jewish, Pacific, Māori, and West African cultures. It argues that to take a global historical perspective on sexual bodies it is necessary to consider a wide range of discourses and representations. It begins with sexual bodies in mythology: narratives of human origin from ancient Greek, Native American, Judeo-Christian and Islamic, Chinese, Māori, and West African cultures. Creation stories purvey ideas about sexual difference, desire, beauty, and gender relations that reflect a culture’s deepest belief-systems. Second, it examines sexual bodies in the medical discourses of Western and Chinese history, summarising ancient Western concepts of sex difference as a matter of moisture, heat, and anatomy, and ancient Chinese theories of qi, yinyang, and beauty. Third, it examines sexual embodiment in lived experiences of gender roles and puberty rites, showing that many Indigenous cultures historically accepted people of nonbinary gender.

Objective:
Pediatric patients with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) have higher rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as well as executive functioning (EF) and fine motor (FM) challenges. Relations between these constructs have been established in youth with ADHD and are supported by FM and EF skill involvement in frontal-subcortical systems. Still, they are not well understood in pediatric FLE. We hypothesized that poorer FM performance would be related to greater executive dysfunction and ADHD symptomatology in this group.
Participants and Methods:47 children and adolescents with FLE (AgeM=12.47, SD=5.18; IQM=84.07; SD=17.56; Age of Seizure OnsetM=6.85, SD=4.64; right-handed: n=34; left-handed: n=10; Unclear: n=3) were enrolled in the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Consortium dataset as part of their phase I epilepsy surgical evaluation. Participants were selected if they had unifocal FLE and completed the Lafayette Grooved Pegboard (GP). Seizure lateralization (left-sided: n=19; right-sided: n=26; bilateral: n=2) and localization were established via data (e.g., EEG, MRI) presented at a multidisciplinary team case conference. Patients completed neuropsychological measures of FM, attention, and EF. Parents also completed questionnaires inquiring about their child’s everyday EF and ADHD symptomatology. Correlational analyses were conducted to examine FM, EF, and ADHD relations.
Results:Dominant hand (DH) manual dexterity (GP) was related to parent-reported EF (Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, Second Edition [BRIEF-2]-Global Executive Composite [GEC]: r(15) =-.70, p<.01, d=1.96). While not statistically significant, medium to large effect sizes were found for GP DH and parent-reported inattention (Behavior Assessment System for Children, Third Edition [BASC-3]-Attention Problems: r(12)=-.39, p=.17, d=.85) and hyperactivity/impulsivity (BASC-3-Hyperactivity: r(11)= -.44, p=.13, d=.98), as well as performance-based attention (Conners Continuous Performance Test, Third Edition -Omission Errors: r(12)=-.35, p=.22, d=.41), working memory (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Fifth Edition [WISC-V]-Digit Span [DS]: r(19)=.38, p=.09, d=.82) and cognitive flexibility (Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS) Verbal Fluency Category Switching: r(13)=.46, p=.08, d=1.04); this suggests that these relations may exist but that our study was underpowered to detect them. Non-dominant hand (NDH) manual dexterity was related to performance-based working memory (WISC-V-DS: r(19)=.50, p<.01, d=1.12) and cognitive flexibility (D-KEFS-Trails Making Test Number-Letter Switching: r(17)=.64, p<.01, d=1.67). Again, while underpowered, medium to large effect sizes were found for GP NDH and parent-reported EF (BRIEF-2 GEC: r(15) =-.45, p=.07, d=1.01) and performance-based phonemic fluency (D-KEFS-Letter Fluency: r(13)=.31, p=.20, d=.65).
Conclusions:Our findings suggest that FM, EF, and ADHD are related in youth with FLE; however, these relations appear to vary by skill and hand. We posit that our findings are due in part to the frontal-cerebellar networks given their anatomic proximity between frontal motor areas and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex - as well as their shared functional involvement in these networks. Future studies should evaluate the predictive validity of initial FM skills for later executive dysfunction and ADHD symptomatology in FLE. If such relations emerge, contributions of early FM interventions on EF development should be examined. Further replication of these findings with a larger sample is warranted.

Background: Sex differences in treatment response to intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) are poorly characterized. We compared sex-disaggregated outcomes in patients receiving IVT for acute ischemic stroke in the Alteplase compared to Tenecteplase (AcT) trial, a Canadian multicentre, randomised trial. Methods: In this post-hoc analysis, the primary outcome was excellent functional outcome (modified Rankin Score [mRS] 0-1) at 90 days. Secondary and safety outcomes included return to baseline function, successful reperfusion (eTICI≥2b), death and symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage. Results: Of 1577 patients, there were 755 women and 822 men (median age 77 [68-86]; 70 [59-79]). There were no differences in rates of mRS 0-1 (aRR 0.95 [0.86-1.06]), return to baseline function (aRR 0.94 [0.84-1.06]), reperfusion (aRR 0.98 [0.80-1.19]) and death (aRR 0.91 [0.79-1.18]). There was no effect modification by treatment type on the association between sex and outcomes. The probability of excellent functional outcome decreased with increasing onset-to-needle time. This relation did not vary by sex (pinteraction 0.42). Conclusions: The AcT trial demonstrated comparable functional, safety and angiographic outcomes by sex. This effect did not differ between alteplase and tenecteplase. The pragmatic enrolment and broad national participation in AcT provide reassurance that there do not appear to be sex differences in outcomes amongst Canadians receiving IVT.

We present the most sensitive and detailed view of the neutral hydrogen ( ${\rm H\small I}$ ) emission associated with the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), through the combination of data from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and Parkes (Murriyang), as part of the Galactic Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (GASKAP) pilot survey. These GASKAP-HI pilot observations, for the first time, reveal ${\rm H\small I}$ in the SMC on similar physical scales as other important tracers of the interstellar medium, such as molecular gas and dust. The resultant image cube possesses an rms noise level of 1.1 K ( $1.6\,\mathrm{mJy\ beam}^{-1}$ ) $\mathrm{per}\ 0.98\,\mathrm{km\ s}^{-1}$ spectral channel with an angular resolution of $30^{\prime\prime}$ ( ${\sim}10\,\mathrm{pc}$ ). We discuss the calibration scheme and the custom imaging pipeline that utilises a joint deconvolution approach, efficiently distributed across a computing cluster, to accurately recover the emission extending across the entire ${\sim}25\,\mathrm{deg}^2$ field-of-view. We provide an overview of the data products and characterise several aspects including the noise properties as a function of angular resolution and the represented spatial scales by deriving the global transfer function over the full spectral range. A preliminary spatial power spectrum analysis on individual spectral channels reveals that the power law nature of the density distribution extends down to scales of 10 pc. We highlight the scientific potential of these data by comparing the properties of an outflowing high-velocity cloud with previous ASKAP+Parkes ${\rm H\small I}$ test observations.

Summary
In present-day Norwich one can visit a version of the church where the recluse who called herself Julian spent perhaps forty years of her life. I say ‘version’ because although St Julian's Church, off Rouen Road in the south-east corner of the city, looks medieval it was largely reconstructed following severe damage suffered during bombing raids in 1942. ‘Mother Julian's Cell’ is an entirely modern structure built from scratch in the early 1950s. It adjoins the south wall of the church and is accessible via a Norman doorway moved to the site from the bombed-out church of St Michael at Thorn. Despite the cell's recent construction, Norwich tourist literature confidently asserts that it is ‘on the site of her original cell’ or that the present structure is ‘Julian's cell … now enlarged and furnished as a chapel’. Like so much about modern reconstructions of Julian's life, this is a fiction. The cell is no more medieval than the post-war housing estates in modern Conisford. The site of Julian's anchorhold is not known for certain, but Roberta Gilchrist and Marilyn Oliva comment that it would be unusual for an anchoress's cell to be placed against the south wall of a church, given that most surviving examples are on the north side. Compelling counter-evidence is also offered by the eighteenth-century antiquarian Francis Blomefield, describing the church he visited: ‘In the East Part of this Church-yard stood an Anchorage, in which Ankeress or Recluse dwelt ‘till the Dissolution, when the House was demolished, tho’ the Foundations may still be seen: In 1393, Lady Julian the Ankeress here, was a strict Recluse, and had 2 Servants to attend her in her old Age.’ If we are to believe Blomefield the cell was never attached to either the north or south wall of the church, but was a freestanding structure. On a brief visit to St Julian's in January 2007 I peered over the churchyard wall towards the place where Julian's cell may once have stood and felt the futility of overenthusiastic attempts to reconstruct details of Julian's life.
The two versions of Julian's revelations – especially the later Long Text, A Revelation of Love – deliberately omit autobiographical narrative, unlike Margery Kempe's account or those of many other contemporary mystical writers. The few biographical details that one can be reasonably sure about are summarised by Liz Herbert McAvoy in the Introduction to this volume.

Ultramicrotomy, the technique of cutting nanometers-thin slices of material using a diamond knife, was applied to prepare transmission electron microscope (TEM) specimens of nanoporous poly(methylsilsesquioxane) (PMSSQ) thin films. This technique was compared to focused ion beam (FIB) cross-section preparation to address possible artifacts resulting from deformation of nanoporous microstructure during the sample preparation. It was found that ultramicrotomy is a successful TEM specimen preparation method for nanoporous PMSSQ thin films when combined with low-energy ion milling as a final step. A thick, sacrificial carbon coating was identified as a method of reducing defects from the FIB process which included film shrinkage and pore deformation.

Assessment of pinniped predation most often relies on analysis of the hard, undigested prey remains evident in faecal (scat) samples. For many prey species this method can yield valuable information on predator–prey interactions. For some genera, however, species diagnostic characteristics are lost during the process of prey digestion, thereby preventing morphological identification of fish prey species. Here, the feasibility of using faecal DNA to detect the presence of salmonids in pinniped scat samples and to distinguish reliably between sea trout Salmo trutta and Atlantic salmon S. salar was assessed. Novel salmonid mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) primers were designed to amplify 162 bp of the 16S rDNA and a 327 bp section of the cytochrome b gene. Species-specific banding patterns were obtained by digestion of the cytochrome b PCR product with the restriction endonuclease AluI, and confirmed by the species-specific amplification of the 16S rDNA fragment from Atlantic salmon. Scats collected from captive grey seals Halichoerus grypus fed on known monospecific diets used to validate the PCR-RFLP assay indicated a probability of at least 95.8% (23 of 24 faecal extracts) of detecting salmonids using DNA extracted from the scat matrix. Implemented alongside conventional prey remains analyses, this technique presents a promising new method for examining prey composition and assessing pinniped predation on salmonids.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
Imagine the scene. A gentry girl of, shall we say, fifteen, is sitting with her family in their parish church, in a private pew near the chancel. It is during Lent, some time in the middle of the fifteenth century, and the priest has chosen for his sermon the well-worn theme of the seven deadly sins. He begins with the first mortal sin, pride, and among the admonitions our maiden hears this cautionary tale:
A countas, chast of body, gret in doing almes-dedys, devowt in prayerys, deyid, & was drawyn wyth feendys to helle-ward, & cryed, ‘alas!’, & aperyd to a lady of fraunce, fowl as a feend, & seyde to here: ‘be þou ware be me & alle oþere! For I was a good lyuere in alle oþere thynges, saaf I hadde delyӠte in pride and veynglorye, in prowde aray of myn heuyd & of my body, in longe traynes, & in brode hornys, and I desyred werdly worschyppe. And only for þis pryde I am dampnyd wyth-outyn ende!’
The dangers posed not only to a woman’s own soul but also to those of the men who might behold her fashionably dressed and adorned body are hammered home some minutes later when the priest, having been diverted onto other themes through discourses on wrath, envy, sloth, avarice, and gluttony, reaches his crescendo with lechery, which some called the sin ‘fyrþest … fro heuene’, because it damns two souls in one act. Again, our maiden and other female parishioners are urged to think on their carefully tended hair, their fine dresses, their eye-catching headdresses, and the desperate state of damnation which these could lead them, and others, into:
Men may synnen ofte in syӠt of wommen; as nyce wommen þat dyӠten hem qweyntly to make men to mys-vsyn here syӠt on hem, and Ӡit þei wenyn þei synen nouӠt, for þei consentyn noӠt to hem. but þei synne grevously, for þei are cause þat þe soulys of manye men are lost. Ӡif þe womman in here entent doth so in here aray, þat men þat beholdyn here hadde desyre to don foly wyth here, þanne sche is cause of here synne.
