Influence of Underperformance Duration on Firms’ Responses to Performance Feedback: Evidence from the Chinese Manufacturing Industry

The management literature has extensively explored how firms respond to underperformance through innovation, with prior studies based on the behavioral theory of the firm and the threat-rigidity thesis producing inconsistent results. The shifting focus of attention model provides crucial insights to reconcile this contradiction. We extend this model by highlighting the temporal dimension of performance shortfall. Specifically, we argue that underperformance duration flattens the inverted U-shaped relationship by attenuating both the problemistic search and threat rigidity mechanisms. The empirical results from a sample of Chinese listed manufacturing firms between 2010 and 2019 support our predicted inverted U-relationship between underperformance intensity and research and development (R&D) investment, and the moderating effect of underperformance duration. Interestingly, the inverted U-shape flips to a U-shape if underperformance extends into the long term. We contribute to the literature on performance feedback by considering both underperformance intensity and duration, which conceptualizes their interaction and reconciles extant contradictory findings from a new perspective. We also add new insights into innovation research by theorizing and examining the overlooked boundary condition for the curvilinear relationship between performance shortfalls and R&D investments, which calls for future research to explore the dynamics of the relationship and account for temporal effects.

Objective:
Chronic musculoskeletal pain is associated with neurobiological, physiological, and cellular measures. Importantly, we have previously demonstrated that a biobehavioral and psychosocial resilience index appears to have a protective relationship on the same biomarkers. Less is known regarding the relationships between chronic musculoskeletal pain, protective factors, and brain aging. This study investigates the relationships between clinical pain, a resilience index, and brain age. We hypothesized that higher reported chronic pain would correlate with older appearing brains, and the resilience index will attenuate the strength of the relationship between chronic pain and brain age.
Participants and Methods:Participants were drawn from an ongoing observational multisite study and included adults with chronic pain who also reported knee pain (N = 135; age = 58.3 ± 8.1; 64% female; 49% non-Hispanic Black, 51% non-Hispanic White; education Mdn = some college; income level Mdn = $30,000 - $40,000; MoCA M = 24.27 ± 3.49). Measures included the Graded Chronic Pain Scale (GCPS), characteristic pain intensity (CPI) and disability, total pain body sites; and a cognitive screening (MoCA). The resilience index consisted of validated biobehavioral (e.g., smoking, waist/hip ratio, and active coping) and psychosocial measures (e.g., optimism, positive affect, negative affect, perceived stress, and social support). T1-weighted MRI data were obtained. Surface area metrics were calculated in FreeSurfer using the Human Connectome Project's multi-modal cortical parcellation scheme. We calculated brain age in R using previously validated and trained machine learning models. Chronological age was subtracted from predicted brain age to generate a brain age gap (BAG). With higher scores of BAG indicating predicated age is older than chronological age. Three parallel hierarchical regression models (each containing one of three pain measures) with three blocks were performed to assess the relationships between chronic pain and the resilience index in relation to BAG, adjusting for covariates. For each model, Block 1 entered the covariates, Block 2 entered a pain score, and Block 3 entered the resilience index.
Results:GCPS CPI (R2 change = .033, p = .027) and GCPS disability (R2 change = 0.038, p = 0.017) significantly predicted BAG beyond the effects of the covariates, but total pain sites (p = 0.865) did not. The resilience index was negatively correlated and a significant predictor of BAG in all three models (p < .05). With the resilience index added in Block 3, both GCPS CPI (p = .067) and GCPS disability (p = .066) measures were no longer significant in their respective models. Additionally, higher education/income (p = 0.016) and study site (p = 0.031) were also significant predictors of BAG.
Conclusions:In this sample, higher reported chronic pain correlated with older appearing brains, and higher resilience attenuated this relationship. The biobehavioral and psychosocial resilience index was associated with younger appearing brains. While our data is cross-sectional, findings are encouraging that interventions targeting both chronic pain and biobehavioral and psychosocial factors (e.g., coping strategies, positive and negative affect, smoking, and social support) might buffer brain aging. Future directions include assessing if chronic pain and resilience factors can predict brain aging over time.

Background
Data on trends in the epidemiological burden of bipolar disorder are scarce.
AimsTo provide an overview of trends in bipolar disorder burden from 1990 to 2019.
MethodRevisiting the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, we analysed the number of cases, calculated the age-standardised rate (per 100 000 population) and estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) of incidence, prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs) for bipolar disorder from 1990 to 2019. The independent effects of age, period and cohort were estimated by the age–period–cohort modelling.
ResultsGlobally, the bipolar disorder-related prevalent cases, incident cases and number of YLDs all increased from 1990 to 2019. Regionally, the World Health Organization Region of the Americas accounted for the highest estimated YLD number and rate, with the highest age-standardised prevalence rate in 1990 and 2019 and highest EAPC of prevalence. By sociodemographic index (SDI) quintiles, all five SDI regions saw an increase in estimated incident cases. Nationally, New Zealand reported the highest age-standardised rate of incidence, prevalence and YLDs in 1990 and 2019. The most prominent age effect on incidence rate was in those aged 15–19 years. Decreased effects of period on incidence, prevalence and YLD rates was observed overall and in females, not in males. The incidence, prevalence and YLD rates showed an unfavourable trend in the younger cohorts born after 1990, with males reporting a higher cohort risk than females.
ConclusionsFrom 1990 to 2019, the overall trend of bipolar disorder burden presents regional and national variations and differs by age, sex, period and cohort.

Background
Contrasting the well-described effects of early intervention (EI) services for youth-onset psychosis, the potential benefits of the intervention for adult-onset psychosis are uncertain. This paper aims to examine the effectiveness of EI on functioning and symptomatic improvement in adult-onset psychosis, and the optimal duration of the intervention.
Methods360 psychosis patients aged 26–55 years were randomized to receive either standard care (SC, n = 120), or case management for two (2-year EI, n = 120) or 4 years (4-year EI, n = 120) in a 4-year rater-masked, parallel-group, superiority, randomized controlled trial of treatment effectiveness (Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT00919620). Primary (i.e. social and occupational functioning) and secondary outcomes (i.e. positive and negative symptoms, and quality of life) were assessed at baseline, 6-month, and yearly for 4 years.
ResultsCompared with SC, patients with 4-year EI had better Role Functioning Scale (RFS) immediate [interaction estimate = 0.008, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.001–0.014, p = 0.02] and extended social network (interaction estimate = 0.011, 95% CI = 0.004–0.018, p = 0.003) scores. Specifically, these improvements were observed in the first 2 years. Compared with the 2-year EI group, the 4-year EI group had better RFS total (p = 0.01), immediate (p = 0.01), and extended social network (p = 0.05) scores at the fourth year. Meanwhile, the 4-year (p = 0.02) and 2-year EI (p = 0.004) group had less severe symptoms than the SC group at the first year.
ConclusionsSpecialized EI treatment for psychosis patients aged 26–55 should be provided for at least the initial 2 years of illness. Further treatment up to 4 years confers little benefits in this age range over the course of the study.
Abnormal dynamic functional connectivity of hippocampal subregions associated with working memory impairment in melancholic depression

Background
Previous studies have demonstrated structural and functional changes of the hippocampus in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, no studies have analyzed the dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) of hippocampal subregions in melancholic MDD. We aimed to reveal the patterns for dFC variability in hippocampus subregions – including the bilateral rostral and caudal areas and its associations with cognitive impairment in melancholic MDD.
MethodsForty-two treatment-naive MDD patients with melancholic features and 55 demographically matched healthy controls were included. The sliding-window analysis was used to evaluate whole-brain dFC for each hippocampal subregions seed. We assessed between-group differences in the dFC variability values of each hippocampal subregion in the whole brain and cognitive performance on the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB). Finally, association analysis was conducted to investigate their relationships.
ResultsPatients with melancholic MDD showed decreased dFC variability between the left rostral hippocampus and left anterior lobe of cerebellum compared with healthy controls (voxel p < 0.005, cluster p < 0.0125, GRF corrected), and poorer cognitive scores in working memory, verbal learning, visual learning, and social cognition (all p < 0.05). Association analysis showed that working memory was positively correlated with the dFC variability values of the left rostral hippocampus-left anterior lobe of the cerebellum (r = 0.338, p = 0.029) in melancholic MDD.
ConclusionsThese findings confirmed the distinct dynamic functional pathway of hippocampal subregions in patients with melancholic MDD, and suggested that the dysfunction of hippocampus-cerebellum connectivity may be underlying the neural substrate of working memory impairment in melancholic MDD.
Effects of starvation and refeeding on growth performance, appetite, growth hormone–insulin-like growth factor axis levels and digestive function of Acipenser dabryanus

The aim of this study was to explore the effects and mechanisms of different starvation treatments on the compensatory growth of Acipenser dabryanus. A total of 120 fish (60·532 (sem 0·284) g) were randomly assigned to four groups (fasting 0, 3, 7 or 14 d and then refed for 14 d). During fasting, middle body weight decreased significantly with prolonged starvation. The whole-body and muscle composition, serum biochemical indexes, visceral indexes and digestive enzyme activities had been effected with varying degrees of changes. The growth hormone (GH) level in serum was significantly increased in 14D; however, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) showed the opposite trend. The neuropeptide Y (npy) mRNA level in brain was significantly improved in 7D; peptide YY (pyy) mRNA level in intestine was significantly decreased during fasting. After refeeding, the final body weight, percentage weight gain, specific growth rate, feed intake, feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio showed no difference between 0D and 3D. The changes of whole-body and muscle composition, serum biochemical indexes, visceral indexes and digestive enzyme activities had taken place in varying degrees. GH levels in 3D and 7D were significantly higher than those in the 0D; the IGF-1 content decreased significantly during refeeding. There was no significant difference in npy and pyy mRNA levels. These results indicated that short-term fasting followed by refeeding resulted in full compensation and the physiological and biochemical effects on A. dabryanus were the lowest after 3 d of starvation and 14 d of refeeding. Additionally, compensation in A. dabryanus may be mediated by appetite genes and GH, and the degree of compensation is also affected by the duration of starvation.
Material Image Segmentation with the Machine Learning Method and Complex Network Method

The study of the relationship among the manufacturing process, the structure and the property of materials can help to develop the new materials. The material images contain the microstructures of materials, therefore, the quantitative analysis for the material images is the important means to study the characteristics of material structures. Generally, the quantitative analysis for the material microstructures is based on the exact segmentation of the materials images. However, most material microstructures are shown with various shapes and complex textures in images, and they seriously hinder the exact segmentation of the component elements. In this research, machine learning method and complex networks method are adopted to the challenge of automatic material image segmentation. Two segmentation tasks are completed: on the one hand, the images of the titanium alloy are segmented based on the pixel-level classification through feature extraction and machine learning algorithm; on the other hand, the ceramic images are segmented with the complex networks theory. In the first task, texture and shape features near each pixel in titanium alloy image are calculated, such as Gabor filters, Hu moments and GLCM (Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix) etc.. The feature vector for the pixel can be obtained by arraying these features. Then, classification is performed with the random forest model. Once each pixel is classified, the image segmentation is completed. In the second task, a complex network structure is built for the ceramic image. Then, a clustering algorithm of complex network is used to obtain network connection area. Finally, the clustered network structure is mapped back to the image and getting the contours among the component elements. The experimental results demonstrate that these methods can accurately segment material images.
Effects of microencapsulated Lactobacillus plantarum LIP-1 on the gut microbiota of hyperlipidaemic rats

The in vivo effects of administering free and microencapsulated Lactobacillus plantarum LIP-1 cells (2·0×109 colony-forming units/d) were evaluated in high-fat-diet-induced hyperlipidaemic rats. Results from real-time quantitative PCR targeting to LIP-1 cells showed a higher colon colonisation count of LIP-1 in the rats receiving microencapsulated cells compared with free cells (P<0·05). Moreover, the microencapsulated LIP-1 treatment resulted in a more obvious lipid-lowering effect (P<0·05). Meanwhile, their faecal samples had significantly less lipopolysaccharide-producing bacteria (especially Bilophila, Sutterella and Oscillibacter) and mucosa-damaging bacteria (Bilophila and Akkermansia muciniphila), whereas significantly more SCFA-producing bacteria (P<0·05) (namely Lactobacillus, Alloprevotella, Coprococcus, Eubacterium and Ruminococcus) and bacteria that potentially possessed bile salt hydrolase activity (Bacteroides, Clostridium, Eubacterium and Lactobacillus), and other beneficial bacteria (Alistipes and Turicibacter). Further, Spearman’s correlation analysis showed significant correlations between some of the modulated gut bacteria and the serum lipid levels. These results together confirm that microcapsulation enhanced the colon colonisation of LIP-1 cells, which subsequently exhibited more pronounced effects in improving the gut microbiota composition of hyperlipidaemic rats and lipid reduction.
Conserving a globally threatened species in a semi-natural, agrarian landscape

Agriculture threatens biodiversity across the tropics, particularly in semi-natural grassland landscapes, where human populations are high, habitat is easily converted and agriculture is prone to intensification. Over the last 20 years intensive, commercial dry season rice cultivation has emerged as the dominant threat to the Bengal florican Houbaropsis bengalensis, a globally threatened bustard that breeds in the seasonally inundated grasslands of central Cambodia. Although floricans have been extensively monitored for 10 years, no socioeconomic research has been undertaken to examine how local livelihood activities interact with the florican. We conducted household questionnaires and focus groups in 21 villages in the Northern Tonle Sap Conservation Landscape to gather information on household demographics, rice farming and bird hunting in protected and unprotected areas of florican breeding habitat. We identified a significant increase in dry season rice adoption by local communities since 2005. Dry season rice cultivation was strongly associated with agrochemical use and rice fields directly overlapped with florican breeding habitat, reducing habitat availability throughout the breeding season. We identified a low but significant level of bird hunting in grassland households (8%) and revealed a demand for wild bird meat amongst local communities. Our findings suggest an urgent need for conservation interventions in unprotected farmland and emphasize the role of enforcement and community engagement in improving protection within protected areas. We highlight the potential of private sector initiatives such as the Sustainable Rice Platform in reconciling conservation and development for impoverished rural communities.
Quaternary structural partitioning within the rigid Tarim plate inferred from magnetostratigraphy and sedimentation rate in the eastern Tarim Basin in China

It has been proposed that within the Tarim Basin tectonic activity has been limited since Triassic time. However, on the basis of magnetostratigraphy from the eastern Tarim Basin, which defines the chronology of sedimentation and structural evolution of the basin, we show that the basin interior has been uplifted and partitioned during Quaternary. The magnetostratigraphy was constructed from 2228 samples that yielded acceptable inclination values. Characteristic remnant magnetization (ChRM) with both normal (N1–N11) and reversed (R1–R11) polarity was isolated by thermal demagnetization. The data correlate best with polarity chrons C3r to C1n, which range from 5.39 Ma to recent on the geological time scale 2004 (GTS2004). An abrupt decrease in the sedimentation rate is observed at 1.77 Ma in the Ls1 core. This change does not overlap with known Pleistocene climate-change events. We attribute this sedimentation rate decrease to a structurally controlled local decrease in accommodation space where basin basement uplifts occur. This period of sedimentary environmental change reveals that structural partitioning in the basement of the Tarim Basin occurred since ~ 1.77 Ma, and we speculate that tilting of the Southeast Uplift (a sub-basin unit) within the Tarim Basin began in early Pleistocene time.

Using nanoindentation, this study develops the criteria to evaluate the creep performance of the intermetallic compounds (IMCs) formed at the interface of microelectronic solder joints. Regardless of crystal structure and melting point, the creep stress exponent (X), one of the parameters determining creep resistance, is in good agreement with tendencies of the work-hardening exponent (n) and also the ratio of yield stress (Y) to Young's modulus (E), which reveals the ability against plastic deformation.
Construction of transgenic swine with induced expression of Cre recombinase

Miniature pigs have been recognized as valuable experimental animals in medical research. However, porcine models related to gene knockout of human diseases are not widely available. The objective of this study was to establish Mx1-Cre pigs using somatic cell nuclear transfer. In this study, we created transgenic pigs using somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). Transfer of 210, 230, 250 and 215 zygotes to four surrogates produced 10 piglets. The Cre recombinase expression in transgenic pigs was studied using reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Mx1-Cre swine were shown to harbor the Cre gene in their genomic DNA using the PCR. In conclusion, Mx1-Cre transgenic piglets were successfully produced by SCNT. These transgenic swine, in conjunction with inducible systems for controlling Cre expression and function, are likely to have a profound impact on the study of human diseases.
Intermetallic formation induced substrate dissolution in electroless Ni(P)-solder interconnections

The effect of minor transition metal (TM) additives of Ni, Co, or Zn on the interfacial reactions of the solder joints between Sn–Ag–Cu (SAC) solder and the Cu/Ni(P)/Au substrate was investigated, especially subsequent to multi-reflowing. (Cu,Ni)6Sn5 formed at the interface of all the joints except that of SAC–Ni, of which the interfacial compound was (Ni,Cu)6Sn5. The interfacial compounds of the SAC–Co and SAC–Zn contained a small amount of alloying elements of less than 3 at.%. Two P-rich layers, Ni3P and Ni–Sn–P emerged at the interface of the SAC joints. Nanoindentation analysis indicates that the hardness and Young’s modulus of these two phases were slightly higher than those of the Ni(P) substrate, which were in turn much greater than those of the Cu–Ni–Sn compounds. Worthy of notice is that with TM additions, the Ni–Sn–P phase between Ni3P and interfacial compounds was absent even after 10 reflows. For the SAC–Co joints, the growth of Ni-containing intermetallic compounds within the solder gave rise to the excess Ni dissolution, which caused a discrete Ni3P layer and over-consumed Ni(P) substrate underneath the grooves in-between (Cu, Ni)6Sn5 scallop grains at the interface. This phenomenon is presented for the first time, and the mechanism is proposed in this study.

A full-length cry1Ia gene fragment, obtained by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification with a pair of primers designed according to cry1Ia-type gene sequences and DNA from Bacillus thuringiensis as template, was introduced into the expression vector pET-21b and transformed into Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). The molecular weight of the induced expression product was 81.2 kDa. The amino acid sequence of Cry1Ia was very different from sequences of 12 known Cry1Ia-type proteins. This gene was designated as cry1Ia8 by the International B. thuringiensis Insecticidal Protein Nomenclature Committee (accession number AF373207). The bioassay results indicated that Cry1Ia toxin protein showed distinct insecticidal activity against Ostrinia furnacalis and Plutella xylostella with LC50 of 0.268 μg/g and 2.227 μg/ml, respectively. It also had insecticidal activity against Leguminivora glycinivorella, but not against Pyrrhalta aenescens. The novel cry1Ia8 gene will be an important resource in constructing genetically engineered bacteria and transgenic plants for biocontrol of insect pests. It is also available for screening gene stacks to delay pest resistance.
