Algorithms for reconstructing and predicting nonlinear ocean wave fields from remote measurements are presented. Three types of synthetic observations are used to quantify the influence of remote measurement modulation mechanisms on the algorithms’ performance. First, the observations correspond to randomly distributed surface elevations. Then, they are related to a marine radar model – the second type takes the wave shadowing modulation into account whereas the third one also includes the tilt modulation. The observations are numerically generated based on unidirectional waves of various steepness values. Linear and weakly nonlinear prediction algorithms based on analytical models are considered, as well as a highly nonlinear algorithm relying on the high-order spectral (HOS) method. Reconstructing surfaces from shadowed observations is found to have an impact limited to the non-visible regions, while tilt modulation affects the reconstruction more generally due to the indirect, more complex extraction of wave information. It is shown that the accuracy of the surface reconstruction mainly depends on the correct modelling of the wave shape nonlinearities. Modelling the nonlinear correction of the dispersion relation, in particular the frequency-dependent wave phase effects in the case of irregular waves, substantially improves the prediction. The suitability of the algorithms for severe wave conditions in finite depth and using non-perfect observations is assessed through wave tank experiments. It shows that only the third-order HOS solution predicts the right amplitude and phase of an emerging extreme wave, emphasizing the relevance of the corresponding physical modelling.

NutriProfiel® is a tool to measure micronutrient status and to assess diet quality. It consists of measurement of micronutrient status in blood and a short food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) (‘Eetscore-FFQ’). Based on the results, individuals receive a dietary advice. In this study, we evaluated the application of NutriProfiel in athletes (‘NutriProfiel-Sport’) by assessing the coverage of nutrient intake of the Eetscore-FFQ (part 1) and by evaluating athlete's dietary behaviour after using NutriProfiel-Sport and their satisfaction with this tool (part 2). For part 1, data of 419 athletes were used. We evaluated the coverage of nutrient intake of the Eetscore-FFQ using first and second MOMents (MOM1 and MOM2) sum scores of food items in the questionnaire. Forty-eight athletes were involved in part 2. They gave blood samples for micronutrient status measurement and were asked to complete the Eetscore-FFQ at baseline and after 3 months, as well as a questionnaire on their satisfaction with NutriProfiel-Sport. Results showed that for most nutrients, MOM1 and MOM2 scores were above 80 %, meaning that nutrient intake was sufficiently covered by the Eetscore-FFQ. No difference in diet quality was observed between baseline and after 3 months. Nevertheless, a majority of athletes reported the NutriProfiel-Sport results and advice as useful. On a scale from 0 to 10, NutriProfiel-Sport was graded with a mean (±sd) score of 7⋅6 (±0⋅8). In conclusion, NutriProfiel-Sport is a potential valuable and appreciated tool for athletes and the Eetscore-FFQ as part of this tool sufficiently covers nutrient intake in athletes.

The effect of sharp forward-facing steps on boundary-layer transition is systematically investigated in this work in combination with the influence of variations in Mach number, Reynolds number and streamwise pressure gradient. Experiments have been conducted in a quasi-two-dimensional flow at Mach numbers up to 0.77 and chord Reynolds numbers up to 13 million in the Cryogenic Ludwieg-Tube Göttingen. The adopted experimental set-up allows an independent variation of the aforementioned parameters and enables a decoupling of their respective effects on the boundary-layer transition, which has been measured accurately and non-intrusively by means of a temperature-sensitive paint. The functional relations determined between a non-dimensional transition parameter and the non-dimensional step parameters allow the step effect on transition to be isolated from the influence of variations in Mach number, Reynolds number and pressure gradient. Criteria for acceptable heights of forward-facing steps on natural laminar flow surfaces for the examined test conditions are derived from the present functional relations. The measured transition locations are also correlated with the results of linear, local stability analysis for the smooth configuration, enabling the estimation of the step-induced increment of the amplification factor ΔN of Tollmien–Schlichting waves, which can be incorporated in the eN transition prediction method.

Clinical and experimental studies show an association between maternal periodontitis and adverse outcomes during gestation. On the other hand, there were no studies evaluating the impact of maternal periodontitis on the offspring. Thus, our objective was to investigate the repercussion of maternal periodontitis on the development of asthma in the offspring. Pregnant rats were submitted or not to periodontitis by ligature technique. Thirty days after birth, the puppies were sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA) in order to induce asthmatic response. Our results showed that maternal periodontitis reduced cellular infiltrate in the parenchyma of offspring, tracheal responsiveness, lung edema, and anti-OVA antibodies, without alter mucus as well as cytokines production. We concluded that periodontitis has relevant impact on the offspring’s immune system, blunting the response to allergic and inflammatory stimulus. This study shows the important role of oral health during pregnancy and opens possibilities for future studies in order to explain the effects of periodontitis during pregnancy in the offspring.
