Summary
One of the more curious European reactions to the traumatic Fall of Constantinople to the Turks in 1453 is a carnival play (Fastnachtspiel) by the Nürnberg armorer and gunsmith Hans Rosenplüt. This earliest of the datable German carnival plays is something of an anomaly as the piece depends not upon the usual cast of boorish peasants, quack doctors, or inebriated celebrants of the pre-Lenten festival, but rather upon the arrival of the Turkish sultan himself, Mehmed II al Fatih, Mehmed the Conqueror.
There is a clear temporal marker early on in Rosenplüt's text: “Der groβe Türk ist kumen her, / Der Kriechenlant gewunnen hat / Der ist hie mit seinem weisen rat” (288, lines 2–4) [The Great Turk has arrived here, he who conquered Greece; he's here with his wise counselors]. Likewise, in the Great Turk's central prophetic speech, a date is encrypted — “wenn eins und vier und funf und seβ” (294, n. 15). In 1456, three years after the Fall of Constantinople, the so-called “Duchy of Athens,” a remnant of the Fourth Crusade then ruled by a Florentine, was absorbed into the Ottoman Empire. Between 1458 and 1460 the Peloponnesian Peninsula (the “Despotate of Morea”) and adjoining Aegean islands (mostly Genovese colonies) were likewise incorporated. To the north and west, the rebellious vassal state of Serbia was crushed between 1454–1459, with Bosnia and Herzegovina falling in 1463 and 1467, respectively. The Nürnberg artisan Rosenplüt was thus making festival entertainment out of current and threatening developments to the not-so-distant southeast.

The THz spectral region includes a number of important transitions which allow us to trace the evolution of the interstellar medium. Because of the opacity of the atmosphere in this spectral range, the best sites for ground-based THz observations are on the Antarctic Plateau; of these sites, Dome A is expected to be the best. THz survey science can be carried out with small telescopes, easing logistical constraints. By deploying a submillimetre-wave tipper/ telescope to Dome A, we have trialled several technologies for such an instrument, and we are able to test whether the site quality is sufficient for THz surveys.

The fifteenth century defies consensus on fundamental issues; most scholars agree, however, that the period outgrew the Middle Ages, that it was a time of transition and a passage to modern times. 'Fifteenth-Century Studies' treats diverse aspects of the period, including liberal and fine arts, historiography, medicine, and religion. Volume 35 addresses topics including physical impairments as depicted in surgical handbooks printed in Germany and as reflected through eyeglasses for the blind (a therapy proposed by French vernacular poets); literary constructions of women in de Meun's 'Cité des Dames' and in hagiographic legends of Spain; the evolution of the Order of the Garter as dramatized in Shakespeare; serious elements in French farces; the festival context of Villon's 'Pet-au-Deable'; Boethius in the late Middle Ages; 'A Revelation of Purgatory' and Chaucer's Prioress; 'Piers Plowman' in one British Library manuscript; and narrative afterlife and time in Henryson's 'Testament of Cresseid.' Book reviews conclude the volume. Contributors: Milagros Alameda-Irizarry, Chiara Benati, Edelgard E. DuBruck, Rosanne Gasse, Chelsea Honeyman, Noel Harold Kaylor Jr., James N. Ortego II, E. L. Summary
Blanchard, Joël, éd. Philippe de Commynes: Mémoires. 2 vols. Geneva: Droz, 2007. Pp. clxxii; 1754. 16 illustrations.
Blanchard's latest work seems to be the best and most complete edition of Commynes's new genre, to date. Volume one offers a thorough introduction and the edition's eight books. In fact, to guide the reader, the editor should have given a table of contents of this introduction which starts with a description of nine manuscripts, from which B. selected P (Paris, BNF, ms., nouv. acq. fr. 20960 – early sixteenth century – xi); a list of previous editions follows.
Manuscript P is written on vellum (320mm × 250mm), in 211 folios; the pagination is double and modern (B. used the one on the bottom of folios). The covers of the manuscript have been added later (embossed), i.e., after the sixteenth century, according to Omont's catalogue. The text was proofread and corrected on the margins and/or on interlines, sometimes by another hand than that of the author (or copyist). Two miniatures are visible: on one, Commynes offers his book to Angelo Cato, archbishop of Vienne, who had encouraged the author to write his memoirs (fol. 2r, one full page); the other shows the battle of Fornoue (fol. 149v) depicted at several levels: Charles VIII against the Italians. Both miniatures are placed into vol. two of B.'s edition, just before the glossary; and both show the architectural gilding favored in the Renaissance, along with a heraldic identification of the main figures. According to B. Mandrot (editor of the Memoirs, 1901–03), the date of the illuminations is 1530.

Summary
Introduction
The Earth's climate system is presently undergoing an uncontrolled experiment as a result of man's increasing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and other greenhouse gases – gases that exert a positive radiative forcing of climate – into the atmosphere, as well as anthropogenic aerosols (microscopic particles) that have a negative radiative forcing. As a net result of these forcings and associated dynamics, changes in global mean temperature are predicted to exceed their natural variability between the decades 1980 and 2010 (Cubasch et al., 1995). An assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded cautiously that the balance of observational evidence already suggests a discernible human influence on the global climate (IPCC, 1995).
As a complement to observational studies, numerical models are used to understand better climate and climate change, including the effect of anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases and aerosols. The most advanced climate models are coupled oceanic and atmospheric general circulation models (GCMs). These models simulate the climate system based on physical laws describing the dynamics and physics of the ocean and atmosphere, and include representations of land–surface processes and other complex processes including those related to sea ice. Model runs include changes in external forcings such as those from increasing greenhouse gases and aerosols. A consensus from the numerical modelling community is that greenhouse warming will be enhanced in the polar regions, especially the Arctic (Figure 8.1).
