The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a spotlight on how health outcomes are unequally distributed among different population groups, with disadvantaged communities and individuals being disproportionality affected in terms of infection, morbidity and mortality, as well as vaccine access. Recently, there has been considerable debate about how social disadvantage and inequality intersect with developmental processes to result in a heightened susceptibility to environmental stressors, economic shocks and large-scale health emergencies. We argue that DOHaD Society members can make important contributions to addressing issues of inequality and improving community resilience in response to COVID-19. In order to do so, it is beneficial to engage with and adopt a social justice framework. We detail how DOHaD can align its research and policy recommendations with a social justice perspective to ensure that we contribute to improving the health of present and future generations in an equitable and socially just way.

This report uses 6-year outcomes of the Oregon Divorce Study to examine the processes by which parenting practices affect deviant peer association during two developmental stages: early to middle childhood and late childhood to early adolescence. The participants were 238 newly divorced mothers and their 5- to 8-year-old sons who were randomly assigned to Parent Management Training—Oregon Model (PMTO®) or to a no-treatment control group. Parenting practices, child delinquent behavior, and deviant peer association were repeatedly assessed from baseline to 6 years after baseline using multiple methods and informants. PMTO had a beneficial effect on parenting practices relative to the control group. Two stage models linking changes in parenting generated by PMTO to children's growth in deviant peer association were supported. During the early to middle childhood stage, the relationship of improved parenting practices on deviant peer association was moderated by family socioeconomic status (SES); effective parenting was particularly important in mitigating deviant peer association for lower SES families whose children experience higher densities of deviant peers in schools and neighborhoods. During late childhood and early adolescence, the relationship of improved parenting to youths' growth in deviant peer association was mediated by reductions in the growth of delinquency during childhood; higher levels of early delinquency are likely to promote deviant peer association through processes of selective affiliation and reciprocal deviancy training. The results are discussed in terms of multilevel developmental progressions of diminished parenting, child involvement in deviancy producing processes in peer groups, and increased variety and severity of antisocial behavior, all exacerbated by ecological risks associated with low family SES.

We report on healthcare worker use of a safe zone (outside a 3-foot perimeter around the patient’s bed) and personal protective equipment in 2 inpatient spinal cord injury/disorder units. Workers remained within the safe zone during 22% of observations but were less compliant with personal protective equipment inside the zone.

The thermo-optical properties of gold nanoparticles suspended in liquid water droplets have been explored. A water droplet containing suspended gold nanoparticles was irradiated with a laser beam and the efficiency of light-to-heat conversion (η) was determined. Heat generated by the optically stimulated nanoparticles was found to dissipate through several mechanisms. Convection currents were observed visually inside the droplet by the addition of silica beads (˜3-10 micrometers). This was determined to be the dominant mechanism of stirring within the droplet.

On September 30, 2005, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten printed 12 editorial cartoons, several of which contained caricatures of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. This publication sparked a controversy that began in Denmark and spanned the globe. The cartoon publications stemmed from an article discussing the difficulty in finding illustrators for a book on the life of the Prophet Muhammad. According to the book's author, cartoonists refused contract out of fear of retaliation from the Muslim community, citing the example of the 2004 murder of Theo Van Gogh, a Dutchman, for making the documentary Submission, a film focused upon the position of women in Islam. In addition to the article, nationwide debate discussed the right to freedom of speech and the problems surrounding self-censorship. It was within this context that Flemming Rose, the cultural editor at Jyllands-Posten, asked Danish cartoonists to depict the Prophet Muhammad as they saw him with the underlying purpose to raise the issue of self-censorship and fuel further debate. The cartoons ran alongside an article on free speech and self-censorship.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
Aquatic invertebrates can be found in just about every imaginable freshwater habitat. They bridge the divide from glacial outwash to estuaries, torrential waterfalls to stagnant ponds and from water trapped in the tiny bracts of plants to the largest of our lakes and rivers. Across all of these habitats, invertebrates constitute the bulk of species diversity and account for most of the secondary productivity, as well as performing a multitude of ecological roles. They also create the vital link from primary producers and detrital materials to higher trophic levels. Not surprisingly then, the contribution of restoration activities to the structure and function of aquatic systems will be mediated largely through responses of invertebrates.
Aquatic invertebrates are represented by at least nine phyla in freshwater ecosystems, including the arthropods, molluscs, worms, rotifers and nematodes and many of the family groups are key players in food web structure and function. Various invertebrates may graze on algae, vascular plants and detritus or they may prey upon bacteria, protozoa, other invertebrates, and sometimes even fish or larval amphibians. Others also are parasitic.
Invertebrates influence nutrient cycling and rates of primary production in most aquatic environments. They play an important role in decomposition processes and in altering the transportation rates of organic and inorganic particles in streams (e.g. Wallace & Webster, 1996).
