Summary
Radiculopathy refers to pathology at the nerve root level, manifest as positive symptoms such as pain, paresthesias and dysesthesias, and negative symptoms such as numbness and weakness. While a number of causes for radiculopathy exist, the archetypal etiology is lumbar disc herniation, leading to compression of the traversing or, less commonly, exiting nerve root. Such mechanical bases for radiculopathy were first recognized nearly a century ago, initially in the lumbar region by Mixter and Barr(1934),followed by the cervical spine by Semmes and Murphey in 1943.

Background
Evidence about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of specific subpopulations, such as university students, is needed as communities prepare for future waves.
AimsTo study the association of proximity of COVID-19 with symptoms of anxiety and depression in university students.
MethodThis trend study analysed weekly cross-sectional surveys of probabilistic samples of students from the University of British Columbia for 13 weeks, through the first wave of COVID-19. The main variable assessed was propinquity of COVID-19, defined as ‘knowing someone who tested positive for COVID-19’, which was specified at different levels: knowing someone anywhere globally, in Canada, in Vancouver, in their course or at home. Proximity was included in multivariable linear regressions to assess its association with primary outcomes, including 30-day symptoms of anxiety and/or depression.
ResultsOf 1388 respondents (adjusted response rate of 50%), 5.6% knew someone with COVID-19 in Vancouver, 0.8% in their course and 0.3% at home. Ten percent were overwhelmed and unable to access help. Knowing someone in Vancouver was associated with an 11-percentage-point increase in the probability of 30-day anxiety symptoms (s.e. 0.05, P ≤ 0.05), moderated by gender, with a significant interaction of the exposure and being female (coefficient −20, s.e. 0.09, P ≤ 0.05). No association was found with depressive symptoms.
ConclusionsPropinquity of COVID-19 cases may increase the likelihood of anxiety symptoms in students, particularly among men. Most students reported coping well, but additional support is needed for an emotionally overwhelmed minority who report being unable to access help.

In Canada, recreational use of cannabis was legalized in October 2018. This policy change along with recent publications evaluating the efficacy of cannabis for the medical treatment of epilepsy and media awareness about its use have increased the public interest about this agent. The Canadian League Against Epilepsy Medical Therapeutics Committee, along with a multidisciplinary group of experts and Canadian Epilepsy Alliance representatives, has developed a position statement about the use of medical cannabis for epilepsy. This article addresses the current Canadian legal framework, recent publications about its efficacy and safety profile, and our understanding of the clinical issues that should be considered when contemplating cannabis use for medical purposes.

Background: This study examined the use of low doses of antipsychotic medications (300 mg/day CPZeq or less) in older Asian patients with schizophrenia and its demographic and clinical correlates.
Methods: Information on hospitalized patients with schizophrenia, aged 55 years or older, was extracted from the database of the Research on Asian Psychotropic Prescription Patterns (REAP) study (2001–2009). Data on 1,452 patients in eight Asian countries and territories including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, India, and Malaysia were analyzed. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and antipsychotic prescriptions were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure.
Results: The prescription frequency for low doses of antipsychotic medications was 40.9% in the pooled sample. Multiple logistic regression analysis of the whole sample showed that patients on low doses of antipsychotic medications were more likely to be female, have an older age, a shorter length of illness, and less positive symptoms. Of patients in the six countries and territories that participated in all the surveys between 2001 and 2009, those in Japan were less likely to receive low doses of antipsychotics.
Conclusion: Low doses of antipsychotic medications were only applied in less than half of older Asian patients with schizophrenia.

Summary
Currently pregnant women in the industrialized parts of the world expect to have an ultrasound of the fetus. There is no clear evidence that ultrasound will decrease perinatal morbidity or mortality in low-risk women [1]. However, the mother's perception is that she will find out if the fetus is “normal” and what the gender is. Often she will bring a partner and/or family members.
Universal ultrasound imaging of all pregnancies has not been officially endorsed, particularly in lowrisk women; however 60–70% of women develop a medical indication resulting in a prenatal ultrasound [2]. Several bodies (the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine [AIUM], the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology [ACOG], and the American College of Radiology [ACR]) agree on the indications for ultrasound in pregnancy and the minimum requirement of images, regardless of who performs the studies: radiologists or obstetricians.
Prenatal ultrasound may improve specific pregnancy outcomes indirectly. For example, ultrasound may: (1) identify congenital anomalies to allow for the option of termination or appropriate delivery or management at specialized centers; (2) accurately date the gestation in case of preterm delivery; (3) best recognize multiple gestations, as well as significant growth disturbances.

An 8° off-axis 4H-SiC wafer with circular Schottky contacts fabricated on a CVD grown 4H-SiC homoepitaxial layer was studied to investigate the influence of various defects, including small (closed-core) screw dislocations (Burgers vector of 1c or 2c), hollow-core (micropipes; Burgers vector larger than 2c), threading edge dislocations (from conversion of basal plane dislocations from the substrate into the epilayer), grain boundaries and triangular defects, on the device performance in the form of breakdown voltages. The defects were examined using synchrotron white beam x-ray topography (SWBXT) based techniques and molten KOH etching. The devices commonly contained basal plane dislocations, small screw dislocations and threading edge dislocations, the latter two of which could give rise to low breakdown voltages for the devices. In addition, less commonly observed defects such as micropipes, grain boundaries and triangular defects are much more destructive to device performance than closed-core screw dislocations and threading edge dislocations.

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is ideal for applying precise, conformal coatings over nanoporous materials. We have recently used ALD to coat two nanoporous solids: anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) and silica aerogels. AAO possesses hexagonally ordered pores with diameters d∼10 nm and thicknesses L∼70 microns. The AAO membranes were coated by ALD with successive layers of A1203, TiO2 and V2O5 to fabricate catalytic membranes. SEM, TEM and EDAX analysis of the membranes demonstrate that the ALD layers uniformly coat the extremely high aspect ratio (L/d∼104) AAO pores. These catalytic membranes show remarkable selectivity in the oxidative dehydrogenation of cyclohexane. Additional AAO membranes coated with ALD Pd films show promise as hydrogen sensors. Silica aerogels have the lowest density and highest surface area of any solid material. Consequently, these materials serve as an excellent substrate to fabricate novel catalytic materials and gas sensors by ALD. In this study, both thin film and monolithic aerogels were coated by ZnO ALD and the properties of the aerogels were investigated as a function of the coating thickness.

It has previously been established that a single systemic administration of retroviral vector containing angiotensin II type I receptor antisense (AT1R-AS) in the neonatal spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) prevents development of hypertension, and in addition cardiac hypertrophy and endothelial dysfunction. However, these studies could not determine whether the effects of AT1R-AS on high blood pressure (BP) and endothelial function were independent. Angiotensin receptor blockers have been shown to reduce BP in the L-NAME (N ω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride)-induced rat model of hypertension. Our objective in the present study was to use the L-NAME model of hypertension to determine whether AT1R-AS treatment would lower high BP and attenuate cardiac hypertrophy under conditions of permanent endothelial damage. A single bolus of LNSV-AT1R-AS viral particles in neonatal Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats was without affect on basal BP. Efficacy of the transgene incorporation was assessed by observing a significant reduction in angiotensin-induced dipsogenic response in the AT1R-AS-treated animals. Introduction of L-NAME in the drinking water for 10 weeks resulted in the establishment of hypertension only in the WKY rats treated with vector alone. These hypertensive (BP, 179 ± 4 mmHg) animals showed a 17 % increase in heart weight/body weight ratio and a 60 % reduction in ACh-induced vasorelaxation in phenylephrine-preconstricted arteries. The L-NAME-induced high BP and cardiac hypertrophy were attenuated in rats expressing AT1R-AS. However, endothelial dysfunction could not be prevented with the antisense therapy. These observations demonstrate that attenuation of endothelial dysfunction is not a prerequisite for the antihypertensive effects of AT1R-AS treatment. Experimental Physiology (2003) 88.4, 467-473.
