A longitudinal comparison of emotional, behavioral and attention problems in autistic and typically developing children

Background
Mental health problems are elevated in autistic individuals but there is limited evidence on the developmental course of problems across childhood. We compare the level and growth of anxious-depressed, behavioral and attention problems in an autistic and typically developing (TD) cohort.
MethodsLatent growth curve models were applied to repeated parent-report Child Behavior Checklist data from age 2–10 years in an inception cohort of autistic children (Pathways, N = 397; 84% boys) and a general population TD cohort (Wirral Child Health and Development Study; WCHADS; N = 884, 49% boys). Percentile plots were generated to quantify the differences between autistic and TD children.
ResultsAutistic children showed elevated levels of mental health problems, but this was substantially reduced by accounting for IQ and sex differences between the autistic and TD samples. There was small differences in growth patterns; anxious-depressed problems were particularly elevated at preschool and attention problems at late childhood. Higher family income predicted lower base-level on all three dimensions, but steeper increase of anxious-depressed problems. Higher IQ predicted lower level of attention problems and faster decline over childhood. Female sex predicted higher level of anxious-depressed and faster decline in behavioral problems. Social-affect autism symptom severity predicted elevated level of attention problems. Autistic girls' problems were particularly elevated relative to their same-sex non-autistic peers.
ConclusionsAutistic children, and especially girls, show elevated mental health problems compared to TD children and there are some differences in predictors. Assessment of mental health should be integrated into clinical practice for autistic children.

Objective:
To describe a pilot project infection prevention and control (IPC) assessment conducted in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) in New York State (NYS) during a pivotal 2-week period when the region became the nation’s epicenter for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Design:A telephone and video assessment of IPC measures in SNFs at high risk or experiencing COVID-19 activity.
Participants:SNFs in 14 New York counties, including New York City.
Intervention:A 3-component remote IPC assessment: (1) screening tool; (2) telephone IPC checklist; and (3) COVID-19 video IPC assessment (ie, “COVIDeo”).
Results:In total, 92 SNFs completed the IPC screening tool and checklist: 52 (57%) were conducted as part COVID-19 investigations, and 40 (43%) were proactive prevention-based assessments. Among the 40 proactive assessments, 14 (35%) identified suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cases. COVIDeo was performed in 26 (28%) of 92 assessments and provided observations that other tools would have missed: personal protective equipment (PPE) that was not easily accessible, redundant, or improperly donned, doffed, or stored and specific challenges implementing IPC in specialty populations. The IPC assessments took ∼1 hour each and reached an estimated 4 times as many SNFs as on-site visits in a similar time frame.
Conclusions:Remote IPC assessments by telephone and video were timely and feasible methods of assessing the extent to which IPC interventions had been implemented in a vulnerable setting and to disseminate real-time recommendations. Remote assessments are now being implemented across New York State and in various healthcare facility types. Similar methods have been adapted nationally by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Outbreaks of cyclosporiasis, a food-borne illness caused by the coccidian parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis have increased in the USA in recent years, with approximately 2300 laboratory-confirmed cases reported in 2018. Genotyping tools are needed to inform epidemiological investigations, yet genotyping Cyclospora has proven challenging due to its sexual reproductive cycle which produces complex infections characterized by high genetic heterogeneity. We used targeted amplicon deep sequencing and a recently described ensemble-based distance statistic that accommodates heterogeneous (mixed) genotypes and specimens with partial genotyping data, to genotype and cluster 648 C. cayetanensis samples submitted to CDC in 2018. The performance of the ensemble was assessed by comparing ensemble-identified genetic clusters to analogous clusters identified independently based on common food exposures. Using these epidemiologic clusters as a gold standard, the ensemble facilitated genetic clustering with 93.8% sensitivity and 99.7% specificity. Hence, we anticipate that this procedure will greatly complement epidemiologic investigations of cyclosporiasis.

Background:
Excessive exercise has long been observed to be a problematic behavior of many patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). However, many questions remain as to the exact role exercise plays in this disorder. In particular, it has been suggested that exercise holds “addictive” properties in persons with AN, but that remains to be demonstrated.
Objective:The aim of this study was to adapt and apply a scale used in addictions research to determine whether symptoms of “dependence” to exercise could be measured in a group of women with AN.
Results:Forty-eight percent of individuals assessed endorsed symptoms consistent with exercise dependence in the previous month. The number of criteria met for exercise dependence was directly correlated with a clinical measure of anxiety.
Conclusion:Results support further investigation into addictive properties for exercise in individuals with AN and its relationship to anxiety.

Preterm birth (PTB) has a global prevalence of 11.1% accounting for almost 15 million babies born each year before 37 weeks of gestation. It is a risk factor in over 50% of all neonatal deaths, which amounts to 1.1 million deaths annually. Preterm birth, especially at early gestational ages is associated with a high risk of long-term morbidity in survivors. Despite much research effort, PTB rates continue to rise, placing immense financial and emotional burden on society. In the US, the annual societal economic cost associated with PTB is $26.2 billion with an average of $51,600 being spent per infant born preterm. Preterm labour (PTL) accounts for 70% of these births, of which 25% are preceded by preterm pre-labour rupture of membranes (PPROM).

Avian pneumovirus (APV; officially known as turkey rhinotracheitis virus) is an emergent pathogen of birds in the USA that results in upper respiratory tract disease in turkeys. Six years after the first outbreak in the USA, the disease continues to ravage turkey flocks, primarily in the state of Minnesota. From 1997 to 2000, the industry recorded losses estimated at US$15 million per annum. Researchers have developed sensitive diagnostic techniques, including the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and the reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction, which, when used together, are highly sensitive in detecting APV outbreaks in commercial turkey flocks. Phylogenetic analysis of the nucleotide and predicted amino acid sequence of 15 US viruses isolated between 1996 and 2000 demonstrated that the US viruses are relatively homogenous but different from the European APV subgroups A and B, resulting in the classification of US isolates into subgroup C. Infectious APV was isolated from sentinel waterfowls placed close to an infected commercial turkey farm and from wild Canada geese captured in Minnesota, suggesting that free-ranging birds may be involved in the spread of APV. Current efforts to prevent and control the infection include improving management and biosecurity practices and developing attenuated live and deletion mutant vaccines capable of conferring protection.

The use of a chemically inert and essentially biocompatible material for cellular biosensing is an attractive idea. In this context we have studied the operation of diamond-based ion-sensitive field effect transistors (ISFETs) within solutions of varying pH, and alkali-halide concentrations. In particular, we report the use of an inexpensive diamond substrate material, often referred to as ‘black’ diamond. pH sensitivity was observed when devices based on hydrogen-terminated p-type surfaces where employed, provide some surface oxidation was performed prior to their use. Variation in the threshold voltage for ISFET operation of the order of 20mV/pH unit was determined. In terms of operation in potassium iodide solution, we have shown that the device is shows selective sensitivity to the iodide species, despite the equi-molar presence of both K+ and I- species. The origin of this selectivity is discussed.

Data from Great Britain and the United States from the late 1950s to the early 1990s show relatively little change in the frequency with which citizens engage in political discussions, with whom they are likely to speak, and the variables that shape their propensity to engage in political talk. In addition, analyses of the data show that discussing politics enhances citizens' knowledge of public affairs, even net of other variables known to affect political knowledge. Students of political behaviour and those interested in strengthening democracy need to treat political discussions as an important form of political participation.

A number of endemic diseases of dairy cattle cause significant losses to the dairy industry in the mainland UK (England, Scotland and Wales), both in terms of the reductions in output levels or wastage of resources incurred and the resource costs of disease prevention and treatment (Esslemont & Spincer, 1993; Esslemont & Kossaibati, 1996). Various studies have estimated the costs associated with different diseases (Bennett, 1992). However, these studies use different methods of assessment, relate to different populations at risk, refer to different points in time and utilize different ways of measuring disease and valuations of the effects of disease on production. Thus, it is difficult to use these studies for any comparative assessment of the magnitude of output losses and resource wastage incurred as a result of different diseases. Such information is useful in exploring both the economic consequences of diseases and the potential benefits of research on improved disease control (Howe, 1991; McInerney, 1996).
This paper presents analyses of the impacts on production of five endemic diseases and conditions of dairy cattle in mainland UK: bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD), fasciolosis, lameness, leptospirosis and mastitis (including summer mastitis). These analyses follow from a preliminary economic study of the impacts on livestock production of some 30 non-notifiable diseases and conditions of farm animals (Bennett et al. 1997). The study was funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in the UK, with the (eventual) aim of providing information to policy makers that might help them to reach decisions on allocating funds to research into livestock diseases. Conduction and Valence Band Offsets at the Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon-Carbon/Crystalline Silicon Interface Via Capacitance Techniques

Heterostructure Schottky diode samples each composed of a sub-micron thick layer of intrinsic hydrogenated amorphous silicon-carbon (a-Si1−xCx:H) deposited on an n-type crystalline silicon (c-Si) substrate are used to measure the a-Si1−xCx:H/c-Si band offsets via junction capacitance techniques. The samples range in carbon concentration from x=0.0−0.3. First, a thermally activated capacitance step due to the response of defects at the amorphous/crystalline interface is evident in capacitance vs. temperature spectra taken on all these samples. The bias-dependence of this step’s activation energy provides a direct measure of the a-Si1−xCx:H/c-Si interface potential as a function of c-Si depletion width in each sample. By application of Poisson’s equation, we find that the a-Si1−xCx:H/c-Si conduction band offset ΔEc. increases from 0.00 to 0.10 eV as x increases from 0.00 to 0.26. Second, while under reverse-bias at low temperature, we optically pulsed each sample with c-Si band-gap light to create trapped holes at the a-Si1−xCx:H/c-Si valence band offset ΔEV. By noting the threshold for the subsequent optical release of these trapped holes by sub-band gap light, we found that ΔEV increases from 0.67 to ≥0.83 eV as x increases from 0.00 to 0.26.
