Background:
Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) are common causes of healthcare-associated infections and are often multidrug resistant with limited therapeutic options. Additionally, CRE can spread within and between healthcare facilities, amplifying potential harms.
Objective:To better understand the burden, risk factors, and source of acquisition of carbapenemase genes in clinical Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp isolates from patients in Washington to guide prevention efforts.
Design:Multicenter prospective surveillance study.
Methods:Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp isolates meeting the Washington state CRE surveillance case definition were solicited from clinical laboratories and tested at Washington Public Health Laboratories using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the 5 most common carbapenemase genes: blaKPC, blaNDM, blaIMP, blaVIM, and blaOXA-48. Case patients positive by PCR were investigated by the public health department.
Results:From October 2012 through December 2017, 363 carbapenem-resistant E. coli and Klebsiella spp isolates were tested. Overall, 45 of 115 carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (39%), 1 of 8 K. oxytoca (12.5%), and 28 of 239 carbapenem-resistant E. coli (11.7%) were carbapenemase positive. Of 74 carbapenemase-positive isolates, blaKPC was most common (47%), followed by blaNDM (30%), blaOXA-48 (22%), and blaIMP (1%). Although all cases had healthcare exposure, blaKPC acquisition was associated with US health care, whereas non-blaKPC acquisition was associated with international health care or travel.
Conclusions:We report that blaKPC, the most prevalent carbapenemase in the United States, accounts for nearly half of carbapenemase cases in Washington state and that most KPC-cases are likely acquired through in-state health care.

Many novel therapeutic options for depression exist that are either not mentioned in clinical guidelines or recommended only for use in highly specialist services. The challenge faced by clinicians is when it might be appropriate to consider such ‘non-standard’ interventions. This analysis proposes a framework to aid this decision.

In the Ecuadorian cloud forest, males of the parasitoid braconid wasp Napo townsendi Shaw displayed facultative lekking, appearing both singly and in groups of 2–7 on the leaf tops of various plant species. To attract females, they constantly employed a stereotypical, spread-winged calling behaviour, apparently releasing a sex pheromone combed from the lateral metasomal exocrine glands and applied to the wings and hind legs. Aggregated males used the same posture in conspecific agonistic displays, often leading to physical fighting. While female wasps were attracted to and mated with displaying singletons, they also made a choice among aggregated males. When females approached, males vibrated their wings in a brief courtship and mounted. Details of copulation behaviour, which lasted on an average of 3–4 min, are described. Without apparent physical weaponry, the displaying wasps successfully warded off attacks from an assortment of predatory arthropods, particularly salticid spiders. We present case studies of repeated unsuccessful predation attempts by salticids. Here, we postulate that calling and release of sex pheromone may double as both an intrasexual agonistic display and an aposematic advisory to predators that the wasps employ a chemical defence.

A high degree of variable growth rate between pigs of the same age has been associated with overall poor herd performance and decreased profitability (Magowan et al., 2007). The aim of the current study was to reduce the variation in growth rate between pigs by grouping them in either uniform or mixed weight groups at weaning and offering them either ‘special’ or ‘normal’ dietary regimes during the post weaning and finishing periods.

The production of fuel from renewable energy sources has generated increasing interest in recent years and biofuel production is being encouraged within the United Kingdom. If current government targets are to be met, approximately 2.7 million tonnes of oil seed rape are needed to supply biodiesel which will result in a significant amount of the by-product glycerol. Glycerol may be a useful source of energy in diets for pigs but there is limited research on the optimum level of inclusion, digestible energy (DE) content or on the effect on performance. Research by Mourot et al (1994) suggested that glycerol tended to reduce performance but significantly improved meat quality as assessed by drip loss. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of glycerol inclusion in finishing pig diets on performance and meat quality.

Nine individually penned Finnish Landrace x Dorset Horn ewes with a mean litter size of 2·33 were offered a diet containing 63% digestible organic matter (DOM) and 13% crude protein in the dry matter at a daily intake of 0·82 kg DOM (1·3 x maternal maintenance) from 95 to 110 days of gestation. On day 111 DOMI was abruptly reduced to either 0·67 kg (T1, 0·54 kg (T2) or 0·36 kg (T3)/day and kept at these levels until a few days pre-partum.
Daily N balance before food restriction was 4·9 ± 0·51 g/day. During the periods 3·9 (S1), 11·17 (S2) and 19·25 (S3) days after food restriction daily N balance was 2·8, 2·8 and 3·6 g for θwes on T1, 1·0,1·0 and 0·8 g for those on T2 and –4·1, -4·0and -4·0 g for those on T3. Total lamb birth weight was 8·0, 7·2 and 6·5 kg for treatments T1, T2 and T3 respectively. Using regression analysis it was calculated that plasma glucose concentration in late pregnancy for ewes with a total lamb birth weight of 8 kg fell below the pre-restriction value of 52 mg/100 ml when daily DOMI was reduced to 747 g. At this intake the plasma FFA concentration was 585/i-equiv./I compared with 288 before food restriction. Corresponding values for daily N balance were 5·1 and 4·9 g. A reduction in daily energy intake below 0·75 kg DOM resulted in a rapid decrease in plasma glucose and N balance, the latter being proportional to the increase in the concentration of plasma FFA. The mean daily loss of N from the maternal body was estimated to be 0·4, 1·6 and 6·1 g for treatments T1 to T3 respectively during the period of food restriction.

Previous research in organic electro-optics has shown dramatic increases in the hyperpolarizablity of NLO chromophores. However, this large microscopic activity has not been translated to the macroscopic domain. The polymeric electro-optic (E-O) materials continue to lack the high noncentrosymmetric order of the poled chromophores within the matrix necessary for high E-O response (r33). This deficiency of order represents one major obstacle that must be overcome before E-O device commercialization can be achieved. This lack of order is partially due to the large dipole moments of high μβ chromophores, which cause the chromophores to align in a centrosymmetric fashion through intermolecular electrostatic interactions. However, quantum calculations show that when the aspect ratio between the width and length of the chromophore system is adjusted to be greater than 1.4:1 by adding bulky side groups around the center of the chromophore, it would prevent side on pairing of the chromophores. This would cause a decrease in the large areas of centrosymmetric aggregation and thus allow for easier poling of the system. Here we report the synthesis of a nanoscale NLO architecture in which dendritic moieties have been incorporated around the center of the chromophore to give a three dimensional structure in order to achieve the 1.4:1 aspect ratio and maximize the macroscopic order of the system.

Summary
Since Hamilton's oft-cited prediction regarding the unequal distribution of behaviour among genetically related (kin) and unrelated conspecifics (nonkin) (Hamilton, 1964), the phenomenon of kin recognition has been repeatedly documented among a diverse assortment of animal species (Colgan, 1983; Fletcher & Michener, 1987; this volume). As in other maturing fields of inquiry, attention has shifted from description and documentation of recognition systems to a search for the ‘mechanisms’ supporting kin recognition. This search has produced a canonical list that typically comprises four classes of mechanisms: (1) spatial distribution, (2) familiarity, (3) phenotype matching, and (4) recognition alleles. These hypotheses have been offered as explanations of the dynamic control of recognition, but generally contain reference to the developmental means by which recognition cues come to exert their effects (Hepper, 1986; Fletcher, 1987). Thus, the ontogeny of kin recognition has, explicitly or implicitly, become one of the central foci of debate in this relatively young field.
In nature, among species bearing multiple offspring in a single clutch or litter (including most mammals), a necessary concomitant to reproduction is the association of mother with offspring and of littermate siblings with one another. Therefore, some degree of prior experience with related conspecifics is virtually inevitable. A common experimental design intended to isolate effects of prior experience involves cross-fostering of some offspring to unrelated litters shortly after birth. However, even if performed within moments of birth, cross-fostering cannot separate genetic factors from experiences of siblings that share the same prenatal environment (cf. Ressler, 1962).
