Summary
Merriscourt, in the west Oxfordshire parish of Lyneham, appears in documents as ‘Merry Court’ in 1661, ‘Merescourt alias Mericourte’ in 1555, and ‘Merycourte’ in 1524. In 1954 Margaret Gelling observed that ‘it is probably named from the family called le Mire 1244, 1302–3, le Myre 1278–9, le Mirye 1310–11 (1336), le Mirie 1346, Murie 1361, Murye 1361, Merie 1376, Myry 1401–2, Mury 1428, who held land in Lyneham’. Recent research by Mark Page has dispelled any lingering doubt surrounding this origin, showing that Merriscourt Farm does indeed represent the manorial site of the half-share of Lyneham manor held from before 1235 to 1413 by successive members of the Merry family, all called John.
The earliest John Merry (called le Mire or le Myre in 1244, shortly after his death) was recorded as John medicus holding half of Lyneham manor in the 1230s–40s, and probably the same individual was recorded as John le Mire ‘of Norton’ c.1243, when he exchanged lands in Little Rollright for a meadow in Ascott-under-Wychwood. His parish of residence was evidently Chipping Norton (then including Over Norton and Cold Norton), where John medicus ‘of Norton’ was documented in 1225, and where, as John medicus or John le Mire, he witnessed deeds now in the archive of Brasenose College, Oxford. Other potential family members also appear in the same set of thirteenth-century Chipping Norton deeds, including David, Henry, and Richard medicus, and Robert, variously called medicus, le Mire, or la Myre.
The English surname Merry, for which medieval early bearers spelled le Mirie, Merye, Myrie, Mury, and Myry are given in a recent surnames dictionary, is generally thought to have originated either as a nickname derived from Middle English merie, mirie, murie ‘merry, pleasant’, or as a relationship name from the female personal name Mary. However, the evidence presented above suggests a third etymology which appears so far to have escaped attention. The medieval Latin noun medicus may be translated as ‘medic, doctor, physician’, indicating that the Middle English word from which the west Oxfordshire family derived their surname was not mirie ‘merry’, but miri ‘physician’, itself derived from Old French mire or mirie with the same meaning.

Objective
The study aimed to investigate the relationship between physical activity, gross motor skills and adiposity in South African children of pre-school age.
DesignCross-sectional study.
SettingHigh-income urban, and low-income urban and rural settings in South Africa.
ParticipantsChildren (3–6 years old, n 268) were recruited from urban high-income (n 46), urban low-income (n 91) and rural low-income (n 122) settings. Height and weight were measured to calculate the main outcome variables: BMI and BMI-for-age Z-score (BAZ). Height-for-age and weight-for-age Z-scores were also calculated. Actigraph GT3X+ accelerometers were used to objectively measure physical activity; the Test of Gross Motor Development (Version 2) was used to assess gross motor skills.
ResultsMore children were overweight/obese and had a higher BAZ from urban low-income settings compared with urban high-income settings and rural low-income settings. Being less physically active was associated with thinness, but not overweight/obesity. Time spent in physical activity at moderate and vigorous intensities was positively associated with BMI and BAZ. Gross motor proficiency was not associated with adiposity in this sample.
ConclusionsThe findings of this research highlight the need for obesity prevention particularly in urban low-income settings, as well as the need to take into consideration the complexity of the relationship between adiposity, physical activity and gross motor skills in South African pre-school children.

Surgical advances have allowed for the development of split liver transplantation, providing two recipients with the opportunity to potentially benefit from one donated liver by splitting the liver into two usable parts. Although current data suggest that the splitting of livers provides overall benefit to the liver-recipient population, relatively low numbers of livers are actually split in the United Kingdom. This article addresses the question of whether ethical concerns are posing an unnecessary barrier to further increasing the number of life-saving transplantations. Recognizing that an important aspect of exploring these concerns is gaining insight into how transplant staff and patients regard splitting livers, the article presents the findings of a qualitative study examining the views of senior transplant staff and liver transplant patients in the UK and uses these to inform a commentary on the ethical issues relating to split liver transplantation.

Background:
Dementia is an emerging health priority in Australian Aboriginal communities, but substantial gaps remain in our understanding of this issue, particularly for the large urban section of the population. In remote Aboriginal communities, high prevalence rates of dementia at relatively young ages have been reported. The current study is investigating aging, cognitive decline, and dementia in older urban/regional Aboriginal Australians.
Methods:We partnered with five Aboriginal communities across the eastern Australian state of New South Wales, to undertake a census of all Aboriginal men and women aged 60 years and over residing in these communities. This was followed by a survey of the health, well-being, and life history of all consenting participants. Participants were also screened using three cognitive instruments. Those scoring below designated cut-offs, and a 20% random sample of those scoring above (i.e. “normal” range), completed a contact person interview (with a nominated family member) and medical assessment (blind to initial screening results), which formed the basis of “gold standard” clinical consensus determinations of cognitive impairment and dementia.
Conclusion:This paper details our protocol for a population-based study in collaboration with local Aboriginal community organizations. The study will provide the first available prevalence rates for dementia and cognitive impairment in a representative sample of urban Aboriginal people, across city and rural communities, where the majority of Aboriginal Australians live. It will also contribute to improved assessment of dementia and cognitive impairment and to the understanding of social determinants of successful aging, of international significance.

Summary
The disciplines of place-name study and archaeology have long been central to our understanding of the Anglo-Saxon landscape. However, place-name scholars and archaeologists have not always seen eye-to-eye and mutual mistrust has occasionally prevailed. In this chapter I aim to demonstrate that the study of place-names in conjunction with archaeology can reveal new and important relationships between places and people in Anglo-Saxon England. Case studies are drawn from Wiltshire, where place-names containing a variety of Brittonic and Old English elements inform our understanding of such topics as the British cultural presence and the form and location of Anglo-Saxon settlements.
Place-Name Study and Archaeology: A Personal View
One need only turn to the introduction to the first edition of Margaret Gelling's Signposts to the Past to discover that place-name specialists and archaeologists have not always appreciated each other's point of view:
archaeologists may feel that philologists lack the practical sense needed for the realistic interpretation of names bestowed by peasant farmers. Philologists, for their part, are acutely aware that historians and archaeologists are embarrassingly disaster-prone when discussing place-names.
As a landscape archaeologist with a keen interest in place-names, I am often frustrated by the apparent tensions between the two fields and wonder where and when the problems evident in the above quotation began. The answer appears to lie with the ‘great revision’ of the 1960s, when place-name scholars sought to distance themselves from the ‘clean sweep’ view of Anglo-Saxon England held by leading archaeologists and historians of the day.

Background: The Sydney Memory and Ageing Study (Sydney MAS) was initiated in 2005 to examine the clinical characteristics and prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and related syndromes, and to determine the rate of change in cognitive function over time.
Methods: Non-demented community-dwelling individuals (N = 1037) aged 70–90 were recruited from two areas of Sydney, following a random approach to 8914 individuals on the electoral roll. They underwent detailed neuropsychiatric and medical assessments and donated a blood sample for clinical chemistry, proteomics and genomics. A knowledgeable informant was also interviewed. Structural MRI scans were performed on 554 individuals, and subgroups participated in studies of falls and balance, metabolic and inflammatory markers, functional MRI and prospective memory. The cohort is to be followed up with brief telephone reviews annually, and detailed assessments biannually.
Results: This is a generally well-functioning cohort mostly living in private homes and rating their health as being better than average, although vascular risk factors are common. Most (95.5%) participants or their informants identified a cognitive difficulty, and 43.5% had impairment on at least one neuropsychological test. MCI criteria were met by 34.8%; with19.3% qualifying for amnestic MCI, whereas 15.5% had non-amnestic MCI; 1.6% had impairment on neuropsychological test performance but no subjective complaints; and 5.8% could not be classified. The rate of MCI was 30.9% in the youngest (70–75) and 39.1% in the oldest (85–90) age bands. Rates of depression and anxiety were 7.1% and 6.9% respectively.
Conclusions: Cognitive complaints are common in the elderly, and nearly one in three meet criteria for MCI. Longitudinal follow-up of this cohort will delineate the progression of complaints and objective cognitive impairment, and the determinants of such change.

The perception by arable farmers in the UK of research organizations and companies acting as sources of information relating to plant genetic resource utilization is represented using brand strength plots. In development situations there exist considerable difficulties in achieving technology transfer. The method of brand analysis applied in this paper could be extended to characterize options in the selection of vectors for technology transfer in development programmes. A survey of potential vectors such as television, radio, extension services, univer- sities, government agencies and commercial companies would reveal their comparative brand strength and hence utility for achieving development objectives.

The Aurora programme is the European Space Agency programme of planetary exploration focused primarily on Mars. Although the long-term goals of Aurora are uncertain, the early phases of the Aurora programme are based on a number of robotic explorer missions – the first of these is the ExoMars rover mission currently scheduled for launch in 2013 (originally 2011). The ExoMars rover – developed during a Phase A study – is a 240 kg Mars rover supporting a 40 kg payload (called Pasteur) of scientific instruments specifically designed for astrobiological prospecting to search for evidence of extant or extinct life. In other words, ExoMars represents a new approach to experimental astrobiology in which scientific instruments are robotically deployed at extraterrestrial environments of astrobiological interest. Presented is an outline of the design of the rover, its robotic technology, its instrument complement and aspects of the design decisions made. ExoMars represents a highly challenging mission, both programmatically and technologically. Some comparisons are made with the highly successful Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity.
