PRE herbicides are less effective in the zero-tillage system because of increased residual crop stubble and reduced soil incorporation. However, since weeds are not physically controlled in the zero-tillage system, reliance on efficacy of PRE herbicides is increased. This research investigated the impact of carrier volume and droplet size on the performance of PRE herbicides (in wheat crops at four sites in 2010) to improve herbicide efficacy in conditions of high stubble biomass in zero-tillage systems. Increasing carrier volume from 30 to 150 L ha−1 increased spray coverage on water-sensitive paper from an average of 5 to 32%. Average control of rigid ryegrass by trifluralin (at Cunderdin and Merredin sites) and trifluralin or pyroxasulfone (at Wickepin and Esperance sites) improved from 53 to 78% with increasing carrier volume. Use of ASABE Medium droplet size improved spray coverage compared with ASABE Extremely Coarse droplet size, but did not affect herbicide performance. It is clear that increased carrier volume improves rigid ryegrass weed control for nonwater-soluble (trifluralin) and water-soluble (pyroxasulfone) PRE herbicides. Western Australian growers often use low carrier volumes to reduce time of spray application or because sufficient high-quality water is not available, but the advantages of improved weed control justifies the use of a high carrier volume in areas of high weed density.

Certain practical applications of YBCO coated conductors (CC) involve superconducting tapes wound in coils. In such a configuration the superconducting tape is arranged as closely packed turns, leading to an increase of the magnetic field generated by the current in the tapes and, consequently, a significant increase in the AC losses, with respect to an ‘isolated’ tape. In order to predict and reduce the refrigeration requirements of applications, it is therefore very important to be able to quantify the magnitude of such AC losses, both experimentally and by means of numerical calculations.

Practical applications of YBCO coated conductors (CC) involving superconducting coils will utilize tapes packed together in an arrangement resembling a vertical stack. In such configuration there is an important electromagnetic interaction between the tapes, which strongly influences the loss characteristic of the device.
In the presence of an external magnetic field, the losses are reduced compared to an isolated tape because of the reduced aspect ratio of the conductor and, at least for low fields, because of an effective screening of the central part of the stack. On the contrary, in the case of AC transport current, the losses tend to increase due to the enhancement of the local field caused by the interaction of the self-field produced by neighboring tapes. In practical situations the conductor is usually subjected to both transport current and magnetic field, so that there is a trade-off between the two effects.
In this paper we investigate, both experimentally and by means of finite-element method calculations, the ac loss behavior of a stack composed by a finite number of tapes in different working conditions, and we compare the AC losses to the ones of non-interacting tapes in order to determine if the use of stacked tapes is advantageous from the point of view of power dissipation.

Over current stabilization of YBa2Cu30x (YBCO) coated conductor high temperature superconductor tape is required in most applications. The conductor must carry currents in excess of the critical current, Ic, without damage during over current events. Conductor damage is the result of joule heating and excessive temperature rise in regions with low Ic. We have developed and applied a measurement technique using a locally applied magnetic field with a high spatial gradient to define a small area over which the Ic is depressed. By measuring the voltage and temperature as a function of current, power dissipation and temperature rise were determined. Unstabilized conductors experienced thermal runaway and are easily damaged. Copper stabilizers applied by electroplating decreased dramatically the temperature rise and increased the level of power dissipation compared with the unstabilized conductor.
