Summary
Recovery from alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a dynamic change process, and individuals may take many different pathways to resolve problems with alcohol and seek to achieve a life worth living. This chapter revisits central issues involved in understanding, defining, and promoting positive behavior change in light of new knowledge presented in each book chapter and proposes new directions for future research, practice, and policy aimed at promoting AUD recovery. We contend that expanding the definition of recovery to include a multitude of functional outcomes beyond a singular focus on drinking practices is critical to advancing the science and treatment of AUD. Future research and practice should expand consideration of functional outcomes; measure a wider array of constructs across micro, meso, and macro levels of analysis; and cultivate approaches to mutual support, intervention, and policy that aim to promote an expanded definition of recovery that is not focused solely on abstinence and relapse prevention and emphasizes positive change.
