Polished stone artifacts, found in many parts of the world, are widely cited as evidence of the patience and manual dexterity of primitive man. Investigation of the polishing scratches on the surfaces of a number of stone hammers strongly suggests that the polish is of natural origin, a conclusion supported by the difference between this polish and that in the hafting grooves, known to be man-made.
