Summary

The term ‘behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia’ (BPSD) is a descriptive label for a diverse collection of non-cognitive phenomena that arise as part of the dementia syndrome (1). It encompasses the wide variety of disturbances of mood, thought, perception, personality, and motor activity many people with dementia experience throughout the course of their illness (2). A few examples of neuropsychiatric symptoms and behaviours that are considered under this umbrella term are agitation, depression, aggression, wandering, insomnia, hallucinations, and delusions; all of them have the potential to impact on quality of life and complicate the care of those who live with dementia (3).
