Part Two - New lives for old?
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 20 January 2022
Summary
So far, we have described some positive moves in the future development of ordinary housing, which could be inclusive enough to meet the needs of people of all ages. But what of the present situation? While the majority of older people live in mainstream housing, as outlined in Chapter One, until now our ageing society has largely dealt with older people's needs for support through the development of age-related housing and associated care services. By bringing people to places, the solution to individual needs has been in degrees of collective living. The next section of this text analyses a number of developments in age-related housing, from adapted tower blocks to retirement communities. The authors take a different look at inclusivity by considering a range of places in which older people currently live their everyday lives.
