Optimizing research on the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) involves implementing initiatives maximizing the use of the available cohort study data; achieving sufficient statistical power to support subgroup analysis; and using participant data presenting adequate follow-up and exposure heterogeneity. It also involves being able to undertake comparison, cross-validation, or replication across data sets. To answer these requirements, cohort study data need to be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR), and more particularly, it often needs to be harmonized. Harmonization is required to achieve or improve comparability of the putatively equivalent measures collected by different studies on different individuals. Although the characteristics of the research initiatives generating and using harmonized data vary extensively, all are confronted by similar issues. Having to collate, understand, process, host, and co-analyze data from individual cohort studies is particularly challenging. The scientific success and timely management of projects can be facilitated by an ensemble of factors. The current document provides an overview of the ‘life course’ of research projects requiring harmonization of existing data and highlights key elements to be considered from the inception to the end of the project.

Background
The long-term efficacy of psychological treatments for binge eating disorder remains largely unknown.
AimsTo examine the long-term efficacy of out-patient group cognitive–behavioural therapy (CBT) and group interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for binge eating disorder and to analyse predictors of long-term non-response.
MethodNinety people with binge eating disorder were assessed 4 years after treatment cessation within a randomised trial (trial registration: NCT01208272).
ResultsParticipants showed substantial long-term recovery, partial remission, clinically significant improvement and significant reductions in associated psychopathology, despite relapse tendencies in single secondary outcomes. Body mass index remained stable. While the IPT group demonstrated an improvement in eating disorder symptoms over the follow-up period, the CBT group reported a worsening of symptoms, but treatments did not differ at any time point.
ConclusionsThe results document the long-term efficacy of out-patient CBT and IPT for binge eating disorder. Further research is warranted to elucidate the time course and mechanisms of change of these treatments for binge eating disorder.

The Sxr (sex-reversed) region that carries a copy of the mouse Y chromosomal testis-determining gene can be attached to the distal end of either the Y or the X chromosome. During male meiosis, Sxr recombined freely between the X and Y chromosomes, with an estimated recombination frequency not significantly different from 50% in either direction. During female meiosis, Sxr recombined freely between the X chromosome to which it was attached and an X-autosome translocation. A male mouse carrying the original Sxra region on its Y chromosome, and the shorter Sxrb variant on the X, also showed 50% recombination between the sex chromosomes. Evidence of unequal crossing-over between the two Sxr regions was obtained: using five markers deleted from Sxrb, 3 variant Sxr regions were detected in 159 progeny (1·9%). Four other variants (one from the original cross and three from later generations) were presumed to have been derived from illegitimate pairing and crossing-over between Sxrb and the homologous region on the short arm of the Y chromosome. The generation of new variants throws light on the arrangement of gene loci and other markers within the short arm of the mouse Y chromosome.

The micro-glass electrode used in measuring the pH of blood from the stomachs of mosquitoes was a modification of that described by Caldwell (1954). The electrode was made of capillary tubing, drawn from Corning 015 glass, the outer diameter being 0·5–0·75 mm. and the length about 6 cm. As the electrode was used with a Pye Universal pH meter, and not with the electrometer impedance converter circuit used by Caldwell, it was important that the wall of the capillary tube should be very thin, in order that the resistance of the electrode should not exceed 500 MΩ, the maximum electrode resistance permissible with the Pye Universal pH meter.

Summary
Introduction
The pulmonary circulation receives the entire cardiac output and its vessels are uniquely structured to provide a low resistance system to accommodate the high flow. Thus the vessels are thin walled, comparatively wide, and acutely sensitive to raised pressure. The pulmonary arterial pressure for a normal resting adult at sea level is 14 ± 3 mmHg (1 mmHg ≈ 133.3 Pa) (mean ± standard error of the mean) and so pulmonary hypertension is defined as a level that would be expected to occur in fewer than 1% of a normal population; 25 mmHg or above at rest [1, 2]. This allows a clinical diagnosis to be made. At present, in line with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Registry, exclusion of possible causative conditions, such as cardiac, respiratory, thromboembolic or connective tissue diseases, allows a diagnosis of idiopathic (or primary) rather than secondary pulmonary hypertension. For secondary disease, the predisposing condition is usually evident and patients can be monitored for possible hypertensive changes. The idiopathic form is insidious and, when it does finally present clinically, it is with nonspecific symptoms of dyspnoea and fatigue, so diagnosis is delayed, on average by two years [2]. The principal pathological feature of chronic pulmonary hypertension is pulmonary vascular remodelling, where both the cellular and extracellular components of the arteries undergo dramatic reorganization.
Our knowledge of the pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension is limited and, consequently, despite major advances in recent years, pharmacological therapy is not always successful. For primary disease in particular, there is no real cure and lung or heart–lung transplantation is often the only option for survival [3].
