Studies of the end-Permian mass extinction have suggested a variety of patterns from a single catastrophic event to multiple phases. But most of these analyses have been based on fossil distributions from single localities. Although single sections may simplify the interpretation of species diversity, they are susceptible to bias from stratigraphic incompleteness and facies control of preservation. Here we use a data set of 1450 species from 18 fossiliferous sections in different paleoenvironmental settings across South China and the northern peri-Gondwanan region, and integrate it with high-precision geochronologic data to evaluate the rapidity of the largest Phanerozoic mass extinction. To reduce the Signor-Lipps effect, we applied constrained optimization (CONOP) to search for an optimal sequence of first and last occurrence datums for all species and generate a composite biodiversity pattern based on multiple sections. This analysis indicates that an abrupt extinction of 62% of species took place within 200 Kyr. The onset of the sudden extinction is around 252.3 Ma, just below Bed 25 at the Meishan section. Taxon turnover and diversification rates suggest a deterioration of the living conditions nearly 1.2 Myr before the sudden extinction. The magnitude of the extinction was such that there was no immediate biotic recovery. Prior suggestions of highly variable, multi-phased extinction patterns reflect the impact of the Signor-Lipps effect and facies-dependent occurrences, and are not supported following appropriate statistical treatment of this larger data set.

Nanoparticles of ∼55 nm in diameter have been found to significantly increase the fracture toughness of nanocomposites with a ductile polymer matrix. This paper presents a comparative study of the effectiveness of micrometer-sized and nanosized elastomeric particles in improving the fracture toughness and strength of polymeric adhesives. Particular focuses are on the effects of particle size, matrix ductility, and adhesive thickness on the shear strength and fracture toughness. The results reveal that for an epoxy adhesive cured with a J400 hardener, nanosized particles can produce nearly 18 times more increase in fracture toughness than what can be achieved using micrometer-sized particles at the same volume fraction of 5.0 vol%. This huge improvement of adhesives' fracture toughness by nanosized particles is similar to that observed in bulk nanocomposites, indicating that the superior toughening mechanism of nanosized elastomeric particles is equally effective in thin adhesives constrained by stiff adherends.

Background
To compare potential risk factors for complications and recurrence after radiofrequency catheter ablation in symptomatic atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia in children and adolescents.
MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the data of 213 consecutive patients with symptomatic atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia who underwent both electrophysiological study and radiofrequency catheter ablation, divided these patients into two groups, children (age <12 years) and adolescents (12 ≤ age < 18 years), and compared the location of the accessory pathway, success rate, recurrence rate, complications, presence of congenital heart disease, presence of intermittent ventricular pre-excitation, and presence of Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome in the two groups.
ResultsThe position of the accessory pathway was mostly right sided in children (61.3%) and left sided in adolescents (61.5%). Children had significantly more congenital heart disease than adolescents (6.4% versus 0.8%). Univariate analysis showed children or adolescents with right-sided accessory pathways to be 6.84 times and those with accessory pathways on both sides of the septum 25 times more likely to relapse than those with a single accessory pathway. Multivariate analysis indicated that children or adolescents with two accessory pathways were six times, and those with intermittent ventricular pre-excitation nine times more at risk of relapsing following radiofrequency ablation than those with single accessory pathways. All five complications occurred in children.
ConclusionsThe findings suggest that the position and number of accessory pathways and presence of intermittent ventricular pre-excitation are related to risks of recurrence of atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia in children and adolescents.

Epitaxial SrTiO3 (001) thin films with a TiN template layer have been deposited on Si(001) single crystal substrates by RF sputtering. The deposited SrTiO3 films show a surface with roughness of 0.66nm. The orientation relationship was determined to be SrTiO3(001)[110]∥TiN(001)[110]∥Si(001)[110]. The microstructure and interface of the multilayer was studied using high resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electron diffraction pattern confirmed the epitaxial relationship between each layer.
