Nutrition is a key determinant of bone health and attainment of peak bone mass. Excess oxidative stress induces bone loss while increasing antioxidant capacity promotes protective effects on bone. Nuts are rich in antioxidants; therefore, we tested the hypothesis that compared to a control diet high in fat (40 % energy) and cholesterol, diets containing isocaloric amounts of pistachios (8·1 % g/g) or mixed nuts (7·5 % g/g) for 8 weeks would result in greater bone health in male adolescent (3 weeks; a state of continued skeletal growth) Sprague-Dawley rats. We found no difference in bone mechanical properties among groups. Tibial apparent density was ~5 % higher in the pistachio and mixed nuts groups v. control (P < 0·05) with no clear difference detected for the femur. Expressions of genes known to impact bone turnover and serum bone turnover biomarkers were unaffected by either diet relative to control. Serum antioxidant capacity was ~2-fold higher in the pistachio and mixed nuts groups compared with control (P < 0·05) but were similar between groups. Therefore, pistachios and mixed nuts may increase tibial density, in part, due to increasing antioxidant capacity. Longer dietary interventions may be necessary to elicit detectable changes in other bones (e.g. femur) and to detect potential mechanisms for the possible bone protective effects of nuts.

Summary
Approaches that bring families and educators together as partners can promote positive outcomes for children, families, and schools. Family-school partnerships may be most effective when aligned and integrated within existing school frameworks, such as multitiered systems of support, including positive behavioral interventions and supports. National and international policy supports embedding a social justice paradigm in services for children and families to improve equity and reduce disproportionate practices. Embedding a social justice paradigm in family-school partnership systems and practices promotes cultural responsiveness and equitable systems. The purpose of the chapter is to describe embedded social justice approaches within family-school partnership interventions as aligned and integrated within positive behavioral interventions and supports. Systems and practices at Tiers 1, 2, and 3 are described, with corresponding practical guidelines. Cultural responsiveness, from a social justice paradigm, is included as a core feature of each approach reviewed. International examples of tiered family-school partnership approaches are included to illustrate key points.

Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes is associated with reductions in the electrical response of the outer retina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) to light. Aldose reductase (AR) is the first enzyme required in the polyol-mediated metabolism of glucose, and AR inhibitors have been shown to improve diabetes-induced electroretinogram (ERG) defects. Here, we used control and AR−/− mice to determine if genetic inactivation of this enzyme likewise inhibits retinal electrophysiological defects observed in a mouse model of type 1 diabetes. STZ was used to induce hyperglycemia and type 1 diabetes. Diabetic and age-matched nondiabetic controls of each genotype were maintained for 22 weeks, after which ERGs were used to measure the light-evoked components of the RPE (dc-ERG) and the neural retina (a-wave, b-wave). In comparison to their nondiabetic controls, wildtype (WT) and AR−/− diabetic mice displayed significant decreases in the c-wave, fast oscillation, and off response components of the dc-ERG but not in the light peak response. Nondiabetic AR−/− mice displayed larger ERG component amplitudes than did nondiabetic WT mice; however, the amplitude of dc-ERG components in diabetic AR−/− animals were similar to WT diabetics. ERG a-wave amplitudes were not reduced in either diabetic group, but b-wave amplitudes were lower in WT and AR−/−diabetic mice. These findings demonstrate that the light-induced responses of the RPE and outer retina are disrupted in diabetic mice, but these defects are not due to photoreceptor dysfunction, nor are they ameliorated by deletion of AR. This latter finding suggests that benefits observed in other studies utilizing pharmacological inhibitors of AR might have been secondary to off-target effects of the drugs.

Research on networked language learning is now entering its second decade. While earlier research tended to focus on the linguistic and affective characteristics of computer-assisted discussion in single classrooms, more recent research has increasingly focused on long-distance collaboration. This type of learning environment is challenging to arrange, because it involves diverse learners who operate with different cultural backgrounds, communicative expectations, and rhetorical frameworks. These features, as well as the fact that the communication takes place both inside and outside of class and on students' own schedules, also pose special research challenges. This chapter summarizes what knowledge has been gained about learning and instruction in long-distance online exchanges, focusing on three key themes: (a) linguistic interaction and development, (b) intercultural awareness and learning, and (c) development of new multiliteracies and their relations to identity. In each area, research has indicated that there is no single effect of using online communication, but rather that processes and results vary widely depending on a range of logistical, pedagogical, and social factors.

Continuous-time random walks incorporate a random waiting time between random jumps. They are used in physics to model particle motion. A physically realistic rescaling uses two different time scales for the mean waiting time and the deviation from the mean. This paper derives the scaling limits for such processes. These limit processes are governed by fractional partial differential equations that may be useful in physics. A transfer theorem for weak convergence of finite-dimensional distributions of stochastic processes is also obtained.

Summary
For many second and foreign language learners, experience of the target language has traditionally been limited to opportunities created by the teacher in the classroom, drawing on such resources as textbooks, tapes or CDs, and videos. In recent years alternative modes of delivery in teaching have been developed such as distance learning and self-access learning, seeking on the one hand to economize on teaching resources, and on the other to recognize principles of learner-centeredness in teaching. However, perhaps the most dramatic changes in the mode in which second language teaching and learning is accomplished have come about as a result of developments in computer-based teaching and learning. The Internet in particular has become a new medium of communication that is shaping both the processes and the products of communication. Because computers have opened up new opportunities for communication between both learners and teachers and among second language users themselves, many language teachers see great potential in computer-mediated teaching and learning. The present book offers a comprehensive account of teaching that makes use of computers connected to one another in either local or global networks, network-based language teaching.
Although a number of recent books provide an overview of developments in computer-mediated language teaching, the present book has a wider agenda. It presents not only descriptive accounts of network-based language teaching in a variety of foreign and second language teaching contexts, but also careful empirical investigations of the nature and effects of such innovations.

Summary
Since the early 1960s, language teachers have witnessed dramatic changes in the ways that languages are taught. The focus of instruction has broadened from the teaching of discrete grammatical structures to the fostering of communicative ability. Creative self-expression has come to be valued over recitation of memorized dialogues. Negotiation of meaning has come to take precedence over structural drill practice. Comprehension has taken on new importance, and providing comprehensible input has become a common pedagogical imperative. Culture has received renewed interest and emphasis, even if many teachers remain unsure how best to teach it. Language textbooks have begun to distinguish spoken and written language forms, and commonly incorporate authentic texts (such as advertisements and realia) alongside literary texts. It is in the context of these multifarious changes that one of the most significant areas of innovation in language education computer-assisted language learning (CALL) has come of age. Nowadays, audiotape-based language labs are gradually being replaced by language media centers, where language learners can use multimedia CD-ROMs and laser discs, access foreign language documents on the World Wide Web, and communicate with their teachers, fellow classmates, and native speakers by electronic mail. If language teaching has become more exciting, it has also become considerably more complex.
This book deals with one form of CALL, what we call network-based language teaching (NBLT). NBLT is language teaching that involves the use of computers connected to one another in either local or global networks.

Summary
The rapidly expanding use of computer networking in many parts of the world is transforming the way we communicate with each other, conduct business, and produce knowledge. In the context of language education, computer networks make it possible for learners to access and/or publish texts and multimedia materials and to extend their communicative experience to worlds far beyond the classroom. These possibilities have led to great expectations of how computer networks will enhance language learning. Historically, however, educators' expectations of how new technologies may transform learning have not necessarily been borne out in practice. This book offers an initial step forward evaluating educators' expectations about computer networking by presenting recent research on what happens when language learners are brought together with texts and with other speakers of a language in networked environments.
This book originated when the two of us first met at the National Foreign Language Resource Center Symposium on Local and Global Electronic Networking in Foreign Language Learning and Research at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in July 1995. At the time it struck us that the field was long on pedagogical suggestions for exploiting networking technology but short on research. Despite a growing body of general research on computer-mediated communication, relatively few studies have been published that deal specifically with second language learning contexts. This book attempts to fill that void by bringing together in one volume the best current research on language learning using computer networks.

This text provides a critical collection of recent research in on-line communication for second language learning. The paperback edition provides a critical collection of recent research in on-line communication for second language learning, including uses of e-mail, real-time writing, and the Web. Chapters analyze the theories underlying computer-assisted learning, explore the contexts that affect network-based teaching, and examine the linguistic nature of computer-mediated interaction in both textual and multimedia environments. This book will be of vital importance to language teachers and researchers, as well as to readers with a general interest in linguistics, computer-mediated communication, and education.

Comparisons between the wetting characteristics of (0001)si 6H-SiC and (111) Si surfaces in various acids and bases were made. It was found that 10:1 HF dipped Si (111) surfaces were hydrophobic where as the (0001)si 6H-SiC surfaces were hydrophilic. (0001)si 6H-SiC surfaces capped with a 20Å Si layer, however, were hydrophobic after HF dipping and exhibited outgassing levels on annealing which were several orders of magnitude lower than SiC wafers dipped in HF without the capping layer. Annealing the Si capped (0001)si 6H-SiC surfaces in UHV at 1100°C for 5 min. was found to be sufficient to thermally desorb the Si capping layer and produce a (3×3) Si rich, oxygen free (0001)si 6H-SiC surface.
