Clusters of Salmonella Enteritidis cases were identified by the Minnesota Department of Health using both pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and whole genome sequencing (WGS) single nucleotide polymorphism analysis from 1 January 2015 through 31 December 2017. The median turnaround time for obtaining WGS results was 11 days longer than for PFGE (12 vs. 1 day). WGS analysis more than doubled the number of clusters compared to PFGE analysis, but reduced the total number of cases included in clusters by 34%. The median cluster size was two cases for WGS compared to four for PFGE, and the median duration of WGS clusters was 27 days shorter than PFGE clusters. While the percentage of PFGE clusters with a confirmed source (46%) was higher than WGS clusters (32%), a higher percentage of cases in clusters that were confirmed as outbreaks reported the vehicle or exposure of interest for WGS (78%) than PFGE (46%). WGS cluster size was a significant predictor of an outbreak source being confirmed. WGS data have enhanced S. Enteritidis cluster investigations in Minnesota by improving the specificity of cluster case definitions and has become an integral part of the S. Enteritidis surveillance process.

Nano-scale microstructure of Fe3+-, OH−-bearing crystalline inclusions in experimentally oxidized olivine from a mantle nodule

An olivine grain from peridotite nodule 9206 (Udachnaya kimberlite) was heated in air at 700°C for 9 h. It was investigated by EMPA, by IR and UV spectroscopy and by TEM. The TEM examination reveals hexagon-like inclusions up to several hundred nm in size with a core and rim structure. The AEM data show that the inclusions contain only Mg, Fe and Si as cations. The rims have almost the same composition as the olivine matrix whereas the cores are enriched in iron and depleted in Mg. Electron diffraction data, SAED and CBED, indicate that the rims are composed of a ‘secondary’ olivine while the cores are composed of coexisting feroxyhite FeOOH, bernalite Fe(OH)3 and β-cristobalite SiO2. The presence of nm-sized inclusions in minerals is expected to influence the interpretation of spectroscopic results if spectroscopy is carried out without knowledge of the microstructure.
It is speculated that the complex microstructure of the inclusions is a result of a solid state transformation of a precursor phase, probably a hydrous magnesian silicate, during the experimental heating and oxidation.

The present work shows results on elemental distribution analyses in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 thin films for solar cells performed by use of wavelength-dispersive and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) in a scanning electron microscope, EDX in a transmission electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron, angle-dependent soft X-ray emission, secondary ion-mass (SIMS), time-of-flight SIMS, sputtered neutral mass, glow-discharge optical emission and glow-discharge mass, Auger electron, and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, by use of scanning Auger electron microscopy, Raman depth profiling, and Raman mapping, as well as by use of elastic recoil detection analysis, grazing-incidence X-ray and electron backscatter diffraction, and grazing-incidence X-ray fluorescence analysis. The Cu(In,Ga)Se2 thin films used for the present comparison were produced during the same identical deposition run and exhibit thicknesses of about 2 μm. The analysis techniques were compared with respect to their spatial and depth resolutions, measuring speeds, availabilities, and detection limits.

We characterize the duals and biduals of the $L^p$-analogues $\mathcal{N}_\alpha^p$ of the standard Nevanlinna classes $\mathcal{N}_\alpha$, $\alpha\ge-1$ and $1\le p\lt \infty$. We adopt the convention to take $\mathcal{N}_{-1}^p$ to be the classical Smirnov class $\mathcal{N}^+$ for $p=1$, and the Hardy–Orlicz space $LH^p$ $(=(\text{Log}^+H)^p)$ for $1\lt p\lt\infty$. Our results generalize and unify earlier characterizations obtained by Eoff for $\alpha=0$ and $\alpha=-1$, and by Yanigahara for the Smirnov class.
Each $\mathcal{N}_\alpha^p$ is a complete metrizable topological vector space (in fact, even an algebra); it fails to be locally bounded and locally convex but admits a separating dual. Its bidual will be identified with a specific nuclear power series space of finite type; this turns out to be the ‘Fréchet envelope’ of $\mathcal{N}_\alpha^p$ as well.
The generating sequence of this power series space is of the form $(n^\theta)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ for some $0\lt\theta\lt1$. For example, the $\theta$s in the interval $(\smfr12,1)$ correspond in a bijective fashion to the Nevanlinna classes $\mathcal{N}_\alpha$, $\alpha\gt-1$, whereas the $\theta$s in the interval $(0,\smfr12)$ correspond bijectively to the Hardy–Orlicz spaces $LH^p$, $1\lt p\lt \infty$. By the work of Yanagihara, $\theta=\smfr12$ corresponds to $\mathcal{N}^+$.
As in the work by Yanagihara, we derive our results from characterizations of coefficient multipliers from $\mathcal{N}_\alpha^p$ into various smaller classical spaces of analytic functions on $\Delta$.

Erythrocyte invasion profiles are associated with a common invasion ligand polymorphism in Senegalese isolates of Plasmodium falciparum

Plasmodium falciparum parasites use multiple ligand-receptor interactions to invade human erythrocytes. Variant expression levels of members of the PfRh and PfEBA ligand families are associated with the use of different erythrocyte receptors, defining invasion pathways. Here we analyse a major polymorphism, a large sequence deletion in the PfRh2b ligand, and erythrocyte invasion profiles in uncultured Senegalese isolates. Parasites vary considerably in their use of sialic acid-containing and protease-sensitive erythrocyte receptors for invasion. The erythrocyte selectivity index was not related to invasion pathway usage, while parasite multiplication rate was associated with enhanced use of a trypsin-resistant invasion pathway. PfRh2b protein was expressed in all parasite isolates, although the PfRh2b deletion was present in a subset (~68%). Parasites with the PfRh2b deletion were found to preferentially utilize protease-resistant pathways for erythrocyte invasion. Sialic acid-independent invasion is reduced in parasites with the PfRh2b deletion, but only in isolates derived from blood group O patients. Our results suggest a significant role for PfRh2b sequence polymorphism in discriminating between alternative erythrocyte receptors for invasion and as a possible determinant of virulence.

The mechanisms of dislocation-defect interactions are of practical importance for developing quantitative structure-property relationships, mechanistic understanding of plastic flow localization and predictive models of mechanical behavior in metals under irradiation. In copper and other face centered cubic metals, high-energy particle irradiation produces hardening and shear localization. Post-irradiation microstructural examination in Cu reveals that irradiation has produced a high number density of nanometer sized stacking fault tetrahedra. Thus, the resultant irradiation hardening and shear localization is commonly attributed to the interaction between stacking fault tetrahedra and mobile dislocations, although the mechanism of this interaction is unknown. In this work, we present a comprehensive molecular dynamics simulation study that characterizes the interaction and fate of moving dislocations with stacking fault tetrahedra in Cu using an EAM interatomic potential. This work is intended to produce atomistic input into dislocation dynamics simulations of plastic flow localization in irradiated materials.

We report on experiments which observe on a microscopic scale the migration of isolated hydrogen in InP, GaAs, and InAs. Using the radioactive acceptor 117Cd, Cd-H pairs have been formed in these III-V semiconductors. After the decay of 117Cd to 117In, H is no longer bound to an acceptor and can diffuse freely. This diffusion has been observed by perturbed yy angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy. At 10 K, the occupation of two different lattice sites by hydrogen has been observed. First results on the diffusion of hydrogen will be discussed.

Protoparmelia hypotremella van Herk, Spier & Wirth, a sterile corticolous lichen, is described as a species new to science, so far known from Austria, SW Germany and the Netherlands. It is rapidly spreading in Germany and the Netherlands. It is apparently close to P. oleagina, and is often found growing together with that species on oak trees along roads in the Netherlands. Both species are host to the lichenicolous fungi Sphinctrina anglica and Tremella wirthii.
