Chapter 2: Phonetics
Christine Shea is an Associate Professor of Spanish Linguistics at the University of Iowa, with joint appointments in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and Linguistics. Her research addresses the broad area of sound acquisition (phonetics, phonology, speech perception and production) in bilingual, trilingual and heritage language populations and focuses mainly on Spanish, Portuguese and English; and sociophonetics (second language dialect acquisition and the sociolinguistic impact of dialect variability).
Sarah Ollivia O’Neill is a Lecturer in the Department of Languages, Philosophy and Communication Studies at Utah State University. In 2018, she completed her dissertation, ‘Sound Correspondences in the English-Spanish Bilingual Lexicon’. Her research interests include the acquisition and instruction of second language vocabulary as well as foreign language pedagogy, specifically in bridge courses.
