The 1888 photograph shows a small hole in the parchment between "a" and "l", which the placement of those two letters evidently takes into account. This hole is less visible in Weber's photograph, because - as personal inspection in Oct. 2001 showed - the (originally white) backing for the parchment has darkened here.
