Technological innovation

Throughout its history, the Press has consistently pushed the boundaries of printing capability. This remains true to this day. Over recent years, investment of over £15 million and partnerships with major international manufacturers have placed it at the forefront of development in the fields of lightweight and digital technologies. The Press's secure digital printing facility, established in 1999 to service the requirements of Cambridge Assessment (formerly known as UCLES), is now regarded as one of the leading centres in Europe for the production of examination material. In 2005, following a strategy to increase capacity in the Confidential print division, two new contracts were won for the production of examination materials: one to provide exam papers for the Republic of Georgia and the other for Northern Ireland.

Manufacturing quality

Cambridge is renowned for its ability to deliver printing and binding services of exceptional quality. It is currently working with leading manufacturers to develop stochastic FM screening: a technique that dramatically improves the vibrancy and consistency of colour printing. Eight coveted national awards won for manufacturing quality since 2003 testify to the widespread industry recognition received.

In every sphere of activity, Cambridge seeks to provide the highest possible quality in the final printed product or website, in technological innovation and in customer care. Formal accreditation to ISO 9001 was achieved in March 2006. Other quality measures in place include Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), which entails monitoring efficiency and quality control measures, and Vision in Print: a UK Department of Trade and Industry initiative, which focuses on operator performance, press availability and quality.

Cambridge Printing offers services specifically tailored to academic and educational publishers and providers throughout the UK, as well as Europe and North America. Environmental concern

Protecting the environment is of major importance to Cambridge. The Press leads the industry both in the development of new technologies that minimize the use of hazardous chemicals, and in the use of vegetable bio-inks. Paper is sourced from sustainable forests, using no ancient growth, and all waste is recycled as far as technology currently allows. Cambridge Printing is currently working towards ISO 14001 accreditation.
