Polish Literature and the "Thaw"

When one is considering the progress, in Poland, of the recent events which are commonly referred to as the "thaw," it is important to keep well in mind certain specific features of the Polish nation and of the Communist rule in that country. They help to explain why the "thaw" took the course it did, why it was a rather more outspoken process than one might expect on the basis of the analogous phenomenon in the Soviet Union, and why, for a certain time, it seemed to be escaping the control of the state apparatus—only to stop short of any demand for complete freedom.

Incidentally, Putrament later claimed that this work was the only one banned by the governing board of the Union of Writers itself. According to Putrament (“Straszak naturalizmu,” Przeglqd kulturalny, 1956, No. 27), the “truth” about The Bathhouse was as follows: the work was originally translated by Sandauer, and the Warsaw troupe “Syrena” was to present it in the Fall of 1950. In (about) October, Sokorski called a meeting at which Putrament was present. A unanimous decision was taken to permit the production. After the meeting “someone” pointed out that the play did not present the Soviet Union in very rosy colors. The play had to wait until 1952 for publication. It was not staged (cf. J. Kott, “Kartka z notesu,” Przeglqd kulturalny, 1956, No. 44) until 1955.
