A quoi bon réfléchir à a la vie de tous les jours des citoyens ordinaires, confrontés a d’innombrables difficultés pour se procurer des biens de consommation de base, si les priorités des dirigeants étaient ailleurs ? Pendant longtemps, les spécialistes de l’Union soviétique et des démocraties populaires ont négligé l’histoire du quotidien et concentré leur attention, comme l’école dite « totalitaire », sur l’histoire politique, cherchant à comprendre les mécanismes du pouvoir exercés sur une société pensée comme immobile et soumise à la volonté politique. De plus, les études sur l’Est européen etaient dominées par la science politique dont l’intérêt allait vers la géopolitique de la guerre froide. Cette structuration du champ de recherche donnait une faible visibilité à une sociologie et à une anthropologie attentives à la compréhension des interactions sociales.
