Selenium and diabetes
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 11 September 2013
In a nutshell
Selenium is involved in diabetes through its anti-oxidant and insulin-like functions. Diabetes depletes selenium status.
However, there is little evidence that giving selenium supplements prevents diabetes, and some evidence that it may increase the risk. RCTs on use of selenium to treat diabetics are lacking. However, any established deficiency should be corrected.
