Bariatric surgery continues to prove superior to diet/medical approaches in weight loss and metabolic improvements, even for moderate obesity.
However, the complication rate of surgery is greater than has been suggested by previous case review series. Nutritional impacts need to be carefully monitored long-term, particularly with bypass surgical techniques and in vulnerable patients, such as pregnancy, teenagers, and the elderly.
