PERFORMANCE AND PREFERENCE OF HYLOBIUS RADIUS BUCHANAN, AND H. PALES (HERBST) (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE) ON VARIOUS PINUS SPECIES

Abstract

The weevils Hylobius radicis Buchanan and Hylobius pales (Herbst) survived to adulthood more frequently, developed more rapidly, and weighed more as adults when reared on diet containing ground phloem from Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris L., or red pine, Pinus resinosa Aiton, than from jack pine, Pinus banksiana Lamb., or eastern white pine, Pinus strobus L. In feeding tests, both weevils preferred Scots pine, although jack pine was preferred over red and white pine. When reared on diets containing phloem from red pines which had received various amounts of nitrogenous fertilizer, H. radicis and H. pales performed significantly better at elevated concentrations of nitrogen. Hylobius radicis adults exhibited a feeding preference for twigs from red pines containing elevated nitrogen concentrations.

Résumé

Les charançons Hylobius radicis Buchanan et Hylobius pales (Herbst) survivent plus souvent jusqu’à l’âge adulte, se développent plus rapidement et leur masse à l’âge adulte est plus élevée lorsqu’ils sont maintenus à un régime alimentaire contenant du phloème moulu de Pin sylvestre, Pinus sylvestris L., ou de Pin rouge, Pinus resinosa Aiton, que ceux qui sont gardés à un régime de Pin gris, Pinus banksiana Lamb., ou de Pin blanc, Pinus strobus L. Au cours de tests alimentaires, les deux charançons ont montré une préférence pour le Pin sylvestre, mais ils ont préféré le Pin gris au Pin rouge ou au Pin blanc. Lorsqu’ils étaient gardés à des régimes contenant du phloème de Pin rouge additionné de quantités diverses d’un engrais azoté, les charançons des deux espèces avaient une meilleure performance aux concentrations élevées d’azote.
