EFFECT OF COLOR ON STICKY-TRAP CATCHES OF PHOLETESOR ORNIGIS (HYMENOPTERA: BRACONIDAE), A PARASITE OF THE SPOTTED TENTIFORM LEAFMINER PHYLLONORYCTER BLANCARDELLA (LEPIDOPTERA: GRACILLARIIDAE)1

Abstract

The effect of trap color on sticky-trap catches of Pholetesor ornigis Weed was studied in experimental and commercial apple orchards during each of the parasite's 3 yearly activity periods during 1982–1984. Seven enamel and 5 fluorescent paints were compared in 8 trials. There was considerable between-trial variation in the percentage of the total number of P. ornigis caught on a trap of one color. Trap color had a significant effect on the total number of parasites caught. There were no consistent differences in the relative attractiveness of the different colors to males and females. During 1984, males comprised more than 75% of all parasites trapped during each of the 3 activity periods. The sex ratio of the adult population emerging in study orchards during 2 of these activity periods was approximately 1:1.

Résumé

On a étudié l'effet de la couleur sur les captures au piège collant de Pholetesor ornigis Weed dans des pommeraies expérimentales et commerciales, au cours de chacune de 3 périodes annuelles d'activité de ce parasite, de 1982 à 1984. Cinq peintures fluorescentes et 7 de type émail ont été comparées lors de 8 essais. On a observé beaucoup de variation entre essais en ce qui concerne le pourcentage du nombre total de P. ornigis capturés par un piège d'une couleur donnée. La couleur du piège a eu un effet marqué sur le nombre total de captures. On n'a pas observé de différence systématique entre l'attirance relative des différentes couleurs pour les mâles et les femelles. En 1984, les mâles ont contribué pour plus de 75% des parasites capturés lors des 3 périodes d'activité. Le ratio mâles/femelles dans les populations d'adultes émergeant dans les vergers sous étude au cours de 2 de ces périodes d'activité était de 1:1.
