The Underwater Archaeology Centre of Andalusia opened in 1997 due to the need to correctly manage and preserve the underwater archaeological heritage of Andalusia; the main goal set was protection. Aware that the protection of this heritage necessarily involved global knowledge thereof, the Centre decided to focus its efforts on executing a core project – an archaeological map – a tool that would enable the establishment of specific protection and preservation mechanisms and the design of research strategies. The results obtained from this project have enabled the achievement in recent years of some of the goals set, notably guaranteeing the legal protection of these space, and drawing up projects with specific research targets.

El Centro de Arqueología Subacuática de Andalucía es un centro joven que abrió sus puertas en el año 1997 ante la necesidad de proceder a una correcta gestión y tutela del Patrimonio Arqueológico Subacuático de Andalucía, planteándose como objetivo prioritario su protección. Consciente de que la protección de este patrimonio pasaba, inevitablemente, por tener un conocimiento global del mismo, opta por centrar todos sus esfuerzos en la ejecución de un proyecto de base, un proyecto de Carta Arqueológica que, como herramienta, permitiera establecer medidas concretas de protección y conservación así como el diseño de estrategias de investigación. Los resultados obtenidos con la ejecución de este proyecto han permitido alcanzar, en los últimos años, algunos de los objetivos con los que éste se había planteado: garantizar la protección jurídica de estos espacios y desarrollar proyectos con objetivos específicos de investigación.

Le Centre d'archéologie sous-marine d'Andalousie fût inauguré en 1997 afin de gérer et de préserver correctement le patrimoine archéologique sous-marin d'Andalousie, avec pour but principal sa protection. Conscient du fait que la protection de ce patrimoine nécessite des connaissances globales dans ce domaine, le Centre décida de concentrer ses efforts sur la réalisation d'un projet principal, à savoir une carte archéologique; un outil qui permettrait l'établissement de mécanismes de préservation et de protection spécifiques et la conception de stratégies de recherche. Les résultats de ce projet ont permis durant les dernières années d'atteindre certains de ces buts, notamment de garantir la protection légale de ces endroits et de rédiger des programmes de recherche à objectifs spécifiques. Das Zentrum für Unterwasserarchäologie Andalusiens wurde 1997 in der Notwendigkeit eines korrekten Umgangs und Schutzes des archäologischen Erbes der andalusischen Unterwasserdenkmäler eröffnet; das hauptsächliche Ziel lag dabei bei Schutzmaßnahmen. Im Bewusstsein, dass der Schutz dieses Kulturerbes ein globales Wissen zu diesem Thema voraussetzt, entschloss sich das Zentrum, seine Bemühungen anfangs auf ein Kernprojekt zu konzentrieren: eine archäologische Karte, die als Werkzeug zur Einrichtung spezifischer Schutz- und Erhaltungsmaßnahmen sowie zur Entwicklung von Forschungsstrategien dienen soll. Die Ergebnisse dieses Projektes haben es in den letzten Jahren möglich gemacht, bereits einige der gesetzten Ziele zu erreichen, darunter insbesondere die Sicherstellung des gesetzlichen Schutzes dieser Plätze sowie die Ausarbeitung von Projekten mit spezifischen Forschungszielen.
