Sundhya Pahuja's talk will aim to introduce the lineaments of a historically contextualised account of the UN ‘Global Compact’ and the associated turn to ‘Business and Human Rights’, the now dominant way of approaching the relationship between multinational corporations and international institutions.
It will do this by tracing the attempt in 1974, by the ‘Group of 77’ developing states, to assert international legal control over trans or multi-national corporations through the establishment of the Commission on Transnational Corporations, and the transformation of that attempt into the UN Global Compact.
The project is part of a larger project directed toward tracing the changing place of the company in international law from the early modern period to the present day in order to reconceptualise the contemporary relationship between multinational corporations and international law.
Attendance is free of charge, but prior registration is necessary by sending an email to the Managing Editor of LJIL at ljil@law.leidenuniv.nl
