Abstract

A review of the literature of the past twenty years on the measurements of fracture properties of compact bone, including measurements of critical stress intensity factors, critical strain energy release rates, measurements of “surface free energies” by impact tests, work of fracture tests and other methods, with an emphasis on the relation of fracture measurements to microstructure is presented. Recent results from the author's laboratory on the relation of work of fracture measurements to specimen size and microstructure are presented.
