2 Scappaticci draws attention to the Carolingian ‘Plan of St Gall’ that shows altars dedicated to Columbanus and Benedict built into the stairs leading up to the main altar on the right and left. This arrangement may also be a reminder of the era of the regula mixta, when both abbots were regarded as normative guides to the monastic life.

3 The source listing reveals that O sapientia, one of the ‘O’ antiphons of Advent, becomes the introit of the Wednesday missa de sapientia, and the antiphon Sapientia edificavit serves as the communion chant.
