The recipient of the 2016 Society for Political Methodology Excellence in Mentoring Award is Janet Box-Steffensmeier, the Divisional Dean for Social and Behavioral Sciences and Graduate Affairs in Arts & Sciences, and the Vernal Riffle Chair of Political Science, at The Ohio State University. Dr. Box-Steffensmeier has a long history of being an excellent mentor, to students and colleagues, both at OSU and other universities. Furthermore, Dr. Box-Steffensmeier has been an outspoken advocate for developing stronger mentorship programs and mentoring opportunities in academia, most importantly reflected in her tireless efforts to develop and institutionalize the Society's Visions in Methodology program. In the words of one of those who nominated Dr. Box-Steffensmeier for this award, "The impact of Jan's mentorship has been felt by political scientists who received their Ph.D. at Ohio State University under her supervision, and by those women who have been able to extend their scholarly networks in the methods community, and receive invaluable mentorship, thanks to the Visions in Methodology initiative." Dr. Box-Steffensmeier has served as a mentor to many others, and her leadership in promoting mentoring programs has been invaluable to the Society for Political Methodology, and to the academic discipline of political science generally.
