Summary
Since Stephen Orgel's groundbreaking publication The Illusion of Power, the politics of Jonson's masques have largely been treated in terms of New Historicism, with criticism often focusing on ‘tracing how the binary structure of the masque – its division between dominant masque and subordinated antimasque – parallels the polarised conceptual, discursive and political oppositions along these two axes’. Despite the obvious advantages of the historicist approach, it has in practice led to masques being reinserted ‘back into a scenario of power and its inescapable confluences that … increasingly looks formulaic and transhistorical’, as Martin Butler has observed; and the most recent commentaries have thus sought new ways of thinking about the genre. David Lindley made an early attempt in that vein to avoid over-simplifying the paradoxical impulses of the masque, noting that ‘the struggle within the poet's work to sustain the transmutation of the circumstances of the Jacobean court and its politics into self-sufficient myth’ is the ‘true fascination of the genre’. Similarly, Butler's later readings of individual masques interrogate the poet's struggle with or ‘negotiation’ of the transformation of contingent, courtly realities into constant, transcendental myth. I want to extend those discussions here by considering a further dimension of the poet's political struggle, namely the way in which Jonson draws attention in his masques to the paradoxical nature of the genre's political work (truthfully reflecting and truthfully praising James and his court), and then deliberately evokes classical ideas of kairos (timeliness) and decorum (seemliness) in order to forge a feasible reconciliation of those contraries – in effect, to keep multiple truths in play at once.

While Ben Jonson's political visions have been well documented, this study was the first to consider how he threaded his views into the various literary genres in which he wrote. For Jonson, these genres were interactive and mutually affirming, necessary for negotiating the tempestuous politics of early modern society, and here some of the most renowned Jonson scholars provide a collection of essays that discuss his use of genre. They present perspectives on many of Jonson's major works, from his epigrams and epistles, through to his Roman tragedies and satirical plays like Volpone. Other topics examined include Jonson's diverse representations of monarchy, his ambiguous celebrations of European commonwealths, his sexual politics, and his engagement with the issues of republicanism. These essays represent the forefront of critical thinking on Ben Jonson, and offer a reassessment of the author's political life in Jacobean and Caroline Britain.

Summary
There have been many discussions of Jonson's political vision – or visions – but this is the first book-length study of how Jonson deployed ‘the resources of kind’ in order to shape his political fictions. As with the counterpart to this volume, Donne and the Resources of Kind, our starting point is Bakhtin's insistence that each genre offers a window on the world: that each of the kinds makes available a perspective on the world, one which is inherited and variously renewed (or sometimes, of course, inherited but not renewed). The questions arising from such a consideration necessarily include these. If genres each offer a perspective – which is to say, in effect, a confluence of perspectives – on the world, how does any given writer use what they make available? How are those perspectives enlarged or diminished, redirected or subverted, violated or endorsed? In this case, then, how does Jonson use genre to offer representations of the political – to refigure what he perceived as the political actualities of early Stuart society? Thus, correlatively, to what extent does he involve his readers in the remembering and remaking of genre, thereby drawing them into recognition of and putative acquiescence with his renderings of political concepts and relations?
Engaging with the Jonson canon by way of those and other such questions, this book at once complements current scholarship and reinterprets major Jonsonian texts.
